Description

Furniture-Casters.
No.150 703, Patented Met/12,1874

NITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.,
HARMON D. OLDS, OF CEDAR RAPIDS, IOWA.
IMPROVEMENT IN FURNITURE-CASTERS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 150,703, dated May 12, 1874;.application filed October 95, 1873.
To all whom t may concern:
Be it known that I, HARMON D. OLDs, of Cedar Rapids, Linn county, Iowa, have invented a FurnitureOaster, of which the following is a specification: l
The object of my invention is to furnish a improved caster, which can be applied directly to apiece of furniture, and avoid the necessity of a block or socket of wood, and one that can be attached directly either to the inner or outer angle of the foot or leg. I accomplish this by attaching a jointed or hinged plate to the upright pin or spindle of the caster, thereby allowing the said plate to be readily ad- `iusted to any angle or surface.
Figure l is a front view of my caster, showing the hinge attachment. Fig. 2 is a side view of the same, likewise showing my peculiar hinge attachment.
I use the ordinary caster-wheel a a', in the drawing, with the arms and shoulder b, from which there projects vertically a longitudinal pin or spindle, e c', serving as a hinge-pintle, which, with the plates d and d, makes a hinge attachment. The plates d and d rest vertically upon the circular plate c, which revolves with the pin e as its axis, and shares with the buttplate screws the Weightof the furniture. The plates d and d revolve around the pin e c as an axis, so that they form a hinge, and can be adjusted to a plane surface or an .an gle of any degree.
The ad\v'antage of this improved caster over those in common use is, that it avoids the necessity of a socket-joint in the wood, thereby Y obviating the need of attaching a block of wood to furniture for the socket. This caster can be screwed to the leg o r foot of the article of furniture, to which it is to be attached, at any angle, or to the inner or outer corner thereof.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is*- A swiveled caster, having a hinge attachment, consisting of the plates or hinge-leaves cl d', in combination with the pin or spindle c e serving as a hinge-pintle, all constructed, arranged, and operating substantially as described and shown, for the purpose set forth.
