Patented May 5.11874.
No.l5 0,483.
ATTDBNEYS.
'UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JONATHAN RAMSEY, JR., OF MIDDLETOWN, CONNECTICUT, ASSIGNOR TO HIMSELF AND MIDDLETOWN SHIRT COMPANY, OF SAME PLACE.
IMPROVEMENT IN SHIRTfBOSOMS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 150,483, dated May 5, 1874; application filed March 7, 1874.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JONATHAN BAMsEY, Jr., of Middletown, in the county of Middlesex and State of Connecticut, have invented a new and Improved Shirt-Bosom, of. which the following is a specification:v
In the accompanying drawing, Figure 1 represents a front view of my improved shirtbosom for open-back shirts 5 and Fig. 2, a horizontal transverse section of the same on the line c c, Fig. l, showing arrangement of plaits and method of stitching to front part of shirt.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts.
The object of my invention is to furnish an improved shirt-bosom for shirts opening at the back, which is made of one continuous piece, and folded into regular plaits, so as to produce a neat outside appearance, retain its stiffness, and save material thereby. My invention consists of a shirt-bosom folded of one piece, with side plaits and re-enforced middle plaits overlapping narrower plaits at the under sideand secured to the shirt by the stitching that defines the middle plait, and at each side of the bosom.
A in the drawing represents a shirt which is opened at the back, and B the improved bosom connected to the front part thereof. The bosom B is made of one continuous'piece of linen or other fabric, made of three or more plaits, C, which are obtained by lapping the edges of the same over narrower T-shaped plaits C', folded continuously therewith, as shown plainly in Fig. 2. One or both of the lower narrower side plaits C of the middle plaits are run under the full width of the middle plait, so as to re-enforce and stiffen the same, while the side plaits are only of one thickness of fabric. The outermost ends of the plaits are merely folded over. The reenforcing of this middle plait gives greater strength to the part most exposed to wear, while the side plaits t easily to the curve of the chest. The bosom is folded, but not stitched, previous to its. application to the shirt. When applied to the same, the stitching is run at both sides of the middle plait and at the outermost ends of the side plaits, forming thereby an intimate connection with the shirt without any eXtra stitching of the bosom. The simplicity and neatness of the bosom, together with the saving in material and stitch, make the same advantageous for general use.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent The shirt-bosom B, composed of the plaits C, constructed and arranged as shown au'. described, for the purpose set forth.
JONATHAN RAMSEY, JR.`
