Description

Aug. 12 1924.
c. HAMMERGREN MATCH SAFE Filed June 25, 1923 Patented Aug. 12, 1924.
UNITED STATES 15%,755 PATENT FEICE.
CARL HAMMERGREN, OF VANCOUVER, BRITISH COLUMBIA, CANADA.
MATCH earn] 1 '11 T 0 all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, CARL HAMMERGREN, a subject of the King of Great Britain, and a resident of the city of Vancouver, in the Province of British Columbia, Canada, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Match Safes, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to improvements in match safes, the objects of which are to provide means wherein a match box of any desired size may be inserted either with or without its cover, and from which matches flow into a convenient delivery tray. A further object is to provide means whereby the flow of matches from the box to the tray may be regulated. A still further object of the invention is to provide for the inserted match box cover being so held that the match striker thereon is conveniently exposed for use.
The invention consists essentially of a vertical back from which is resiliently sup ported a slotted front panel adapted to bear against the matches in the box, which is retained in position between said panel and the back, and a tray into which the matches are permitted to fiow, as will be more fully described in the following specification in which Fig. l is a sectional view of my invention.
Fig. 2 is a perspective view of my invention.
In the drawings like characters of reference indicate corresponding parts in each figure.
The numeral 1 indicates generally a pair of side walls spaced apart and formed with legs 2 upon which the safe is supported when used on a table or the like. The numeral 3 indicates a bottom wall or tray having a sloping front portion 4 which is provided with a rearwarly extending slot 5 by which access is obtained to the underside of the matches lying thereon.
The numeral 6 indicates a vertical back wall which is provided with an aperture 7 at its upper end that the safe may be suspended from a nail or hook to a wall.* The numeral 8 indicates a front panel having a slot 9 through its face and extending upwardly from its lower end for the 'purpose of viewing the quantity of matches in the match box and to permit of their being easily disturbed in the event of their flow from the box to the tray being impeded.
Application filed June 25, 1923. Serial No. 647,770.
The panel 8 is provided with a pair of slotted apertures 10 which are in a plane parallel to its face and extend preferably throughoutthe major portion of its length.
The numeral 11 indicates a rod extending horizontally between the side walls 1 adjacent the level of the floor 3 upon which a spring, generally indicated by the numeral 12, is carried. The spring 12 is preferably formed with a medial horizontal portion 13 extending through the slotted apertures 10, the outer portions 14 being carried clownwardly to and coiled around the rod 11 having their outer ends 15 in bearing contact with the rear wall 6 to draw the medial portion 13 rearwardly.
The numeral 16 indicates a match box of common type encased in a cover 17 and having upon one of its sides a striker strip 18.
Having thus described the several parts of my invention I will now briefly explain its use.
The panel 8 is drawn apart from the rear wall and a match box with its contents is slid therebetween, if the cover 17 is inserted with the box 16 the end of the box is thrust into contact with the floor 8 and the cover partly withdrawn, the front panel is then raised upon the portion 13 of the spring 12 to provide an opening through which the matches may flow, the flow being regulated as desired by the width of the opening. It will be noticed that the panel 8 is supported at a distance from the rear if wall 6 to expose the striker strip 18, rendering it available for use.
It will thus be seen that I have invented a match safe which will accommodate match boxes of varying sizes from which matches are permitted to flow into a tray as desired, and which permits of the free use of the striker strip provided on the match box used.
hat I claim as my invention is:
1. A match safe comprising a rear wall and a front panel adapted to hold a match box therebetween, a match receiving tray, and means for adjusting the front panel to suit varying sizes of match boxes.
2. A match safe comprising a rear wall and a front panel adapted to hold a match box therebetween, a match receiving tray, and means for raising or lowering the front panel to regulate the flow of matchesfrom the box to the tray.
3. A match safe comprising a rear Wall box therebetween, a match receiving tray,
the purpose named.
and a front panel ada-pted to hold a match said front panel being Vertically slotted for 5. A match safe comprising a rear Wall and a front panel adapted to hold a match box therebetween, a match receiving tray, and spring means co actmg between the rear Wall and the front panel for holding the front panel in resilient engagement with the match box.
6. A match safe comprising a rear wall and a front panel adapted to hold a match box therebetween, a match receiving tray, means for holding the front panel in resilient engagement with the match box and means for adjustably defining an opening between the front panel and the match re- 25 ceiving tray.
