To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, J oHN L. WnrrTnN and J. HERMON WHITTEN, of Burlington, in the county of Chittenden and State of Vermont, have invented a new ainluseful Improvement in Mittens and Gloves, of which the following is a specification:
The object of this invention is to increase the durability and usefulness et' mittens 'and n the varrangement of the back and palm pieces, and the ball and buck pieces of the thumb.
In the' accompanying drawing, Figure l represents the pattern out the mittens,
showing the front and back pieces, and the b all and back pieces ot' the thumb. Fig. 2 is a View of the mitten coinplete, showing the palm side.
This mitten is made of four the Wrist, the seen in Fig. 2.
Similar letters of reference indicate corre` spouding parts.
A is the palm. B is the back. C is the ballpiece of the thumb. D is the back piece of thc thumb. E is a seam which starts at the point l" at the Wrist G and runs entirely around the hand and finger part of the mitten, and over the sides of the thumb to the Wristpieee, as seen at H. The balhpiece C of the thumb is attached by this seam to the baci; pieces B and D, and to the palm-piece by the scam I.

It will be seen that the curve J (and consequently the crimp of the leather) is all in the ballpiece U. The seam I connects with the seam E at the point K. The opposite edge ot' the back piece D is attached to the back piece B by a short scam which runs from the ball-piece C to the Wrist. This sea-m is not shown in the drawing. This improvement relates exclusively to the palm and back, (or part in the rear of the course as applicable to gloves as to mittens, and is more especially fesigncd for mittens and gloves made of bnekskin or leather.
Having thus described our invention, We claim as new and desire to secure ,by Letters Patenty l. The patterns A, B, O, auf?` D, as shown and described, for the purposes set iorth.
2. As anew article ot' manufacture, a mit ten marle from the abtweilescribetl patterns, substantially as set forth.
