Be it known that I, JAMES J CUnTIs, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of the city of New York, borough of Man hattan. in the county and State of New York, have invented a new and Improved Quoin, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
This invention relates to quoins and particularly to an improved construction which will not become accidentally loosened even when appreciably jarred.
The object of the invention is to provide a strong construction which will not become loosened accidentally and which is formed so as to remain normally in a given position under the action of friction but which may be locked in any desired position at any time.
Another object of the invention is to provide a quoin in which the two parts thereof cannot become separated.
A still further object is to provide a quoin in which locks are provided at opposite ends designed to readily lock the quoins in any adjusted position at two points.
In the accompanying drawing Figure 1 is a side view of a pair of quoins disclosing an embodiment of the invention.

The tongue 4 of the quoin 1 is also corru-jj gated on the SIClBS and is formed as adovetail as illustrated particularly in Figure-3 whereby 1t may readily co-act with the underlying gripping tion 8 of the locking member 9 portion orprojection 7" and with the underlying or rip'pingf p01- From Figure 2, it will be obser'v'edthat" the large end of the quoin' 2 is provided with a cutout port-ion 10 in which the 'loclting member 9 is placed, said locking member being chamfered at 11 so as to present a pivotal point 12 whereby when the set screw or looking screw 13 is tightened, the locking member 9 may be forced over tightly against the tongue 4. Preferably, the projection 7 and also the underlying or gripping portion 8 is corrugated as shown in Figures 4 and 5 whereby they will more firmly grip the tongue 4t whenever in operation. In addi tion, the parts are made to rather snugly fit the tongue and, consequently, to resist accidental shifting movement. A pin 14: is mounted in the end of tongue 4: and acts to prevent the separation of the respective quoins 1 and 2. A locking structure similar to that illustrated in Figures 2 and 3 may be used in respect to the quoin 1 but preferably the structure shown in Figures 8, 9 and 10 is used. This construction consists of a solid locking block 15 slidingly mounted in the bore 16 of the quoin 1, said block being provided with groove 17 having nnrlerlying gripping; portions 18 and 19 which may be smooth or corrugated as preferred and which act to grip the side walls of the tongue 4:. In order to cause a gripping action to take place, arotatable actuating bar 20 is provided, said bar having fiat surfaces 21 and 22 together with a central.,roundportion upwardly and cons equently, cause the mem belrs and 19 topinch-the tongue 4. What I claim is 1.
