PRINTER S QUOIN Filed Jan. 15, 1931 [6 /2 /5 /2 5 wwwwww Witness Patented Apr. 18, 1933 UNITED STATES CAMILLE JOSEPH VION, OF JERSEY CITY, NEW' JERSEY PRINTERS QOIN Application led January 15, 1931.S'e1'ia1 .No.-508,928. v A
Specifically the object of my invention is to provide a printers quoin with means supported in the quoin and adapted to be operated into engagement with the furniture adjacent the quoin to prevent accidental unlocking thereof.
This invention relates to printers quoins, and the object of the invention is to provide a printers quoin of generally improved character and provided with means for preventing accidental unlocking of the quoin after it has been locked in position.
Accordingly, my invention is embodied in a printers quoin arranged and constructed as hereinafter set forth and as illustrated in the accompanying drawing in which Fig. 1 is a side view of a printers quoin.
Fig. 2 is a top view.
Fig. 3 is a view partly sectional and showing my invention, the locking pin in the upper member being in adjusted position; the lower member showing the position of the locking-pin on the cam before being locked.
Fig. 4 is an end view of the quoin.
Fig. 5 is the key or tool used to lock quoin.
Fig. 6 is the combination screw and cam.
My improved quoin is of the type comprising two symmetrical members arranged to be expanded by a sliding movement of one member relative to the other member by means of a suitable tool or key.
Referring to the drawing7 each of the said two members comprises a body portion 7 having inclined surfaces 8 and 11 permitting the relative sliding movement referred to. Each body portion is further cut away to provide central web portion 9. On each side of the web the body portion is formed with a rack 10, and at one end of the body there is pro- 0 vided a groove 20 through which the web portion passes.
Through the heavy end of each quoin is provided a screw 6 which is recessed at both ends 12 to lit the slot in key 18. The center 5 of the screw is recessed to form a cam 13. A pin 15 which acts on motion of the cam 13 is also provided. This pin 15 is seated in a spring 16 which keeps it in yielding engagement with the cam 13. By applying the key 18 to the screw 6 and turning half way the locking-pin is forced into the furniture or material used to lock type in the chase.
Printers quoins of a somewhat similar construction are known in the art. Here- Y. tofore, however, so far as I know, printers quoins have not been provided with means or members adapted to be operated into engagement with the furniture for preventing accidental unlocking or loosening of the qucin after it has been locked in position.
In use the quoin is expanded by applying the key to the rack indicated by dotted line 19. 'When sufficiently expanded that part of the key marked 18 is applied to screw 6.
In practice, however, it frequently occurs that due to the jarring and pounding incidental to the operation of the press, a quoin is jarred loose and thus may cause considerable damage. My invention provides means to prevent this, because it will be seen that when the locking pin 15 on each member is embedded into the furniture or material on each side of the quoin any possibility of either member slipping or falling out is eliminated.
I claim:
1. A printers quoin composed of two wedge-shaped sections provided with means for tightening the sections with a key in a form, a pin movably supported in each of said sections, and normally held in retracted position within the sections and means for operating said pins outwardly from the sections into locking engagement with the furniture adjacent said quoin.
2. A printers quoin composed of two wedge-shaped sections provided with means for tightening the sections with a key in a form, a pin movably supported in each of T said sections, a spring for normally maintaining said pin in retracted position within the section and means operable from either side of said quoin for moving said pin outwardly from the section into locking engagement with the furniture adjacent the quoin. f
3. A printers quoin composed of two wedge shaped sections provided with means for tightening the sections with a key in a form, a pin movably supported in each of. said sections, a spring for normally Vmaintaining said pin in retracted position Within the section and a member disposed transversely of and Within the section and operable by said key for moving said pin out- 5 Wardly from the section into lookin engagement with the furniture adjacent t e quoin.
4. A prnters quoin composed of two relatively movable fao-operating members, means for locking the same in a chase, a furniture 10 engaging member in each of said quoin members and meansfor operating said furniture engaging members into and out of locking engagement With the adjacent furniture in said chase.
