RAILWAY RAIL FASTENER.
APPLICATIONHLED Nov. 14, 1921.

INVENTOR.
ATTORNEY.
To, all whom it may iconcemi 'Be a knwnthat' J'Qs is H, 'oeLLisS,
' {a c zen 10.1 t e Uni e s i esim id ng at of the Beggs, inthecounty of Okmulgee and State of Qklahornagh ave invented certain new and useful Improvements in Railway Rail Fasteners, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to railway rail fasteners, and has for one of its objects to improve the construction and increase the efficiency and utility of devices of this character.
Another object of this invention is 'to' provide a device of this character which may be applied to rails of various sizesand forms Without change in the rail structure.
With these and other objects in view the invention consists in certain novel features of construction as hereinafter shown and described and then specifically pointed out in the claims, and in the drawings illustrative preferred embodiment of the invention;-
Figure 1 is a perspective view of the improved device applied.
Fig. 2 is a plan view, partly in section.
Fig. 3 is a side elevation.
Fig. 4 is an end elevation of the improved device applied to a railway rail, the rail being in transverse section.
Fig. 5 is a transverse section on the line 5-5 of Fig. 3.
Fig. 6 is a detached perspective view of one of the clamp bolts.
Fig. 7-is a detail perspective view of a part of the wedge key and the holding pawl.
The improved device comprises a clamp plate 10, preferably tapered or wedge shaped longitudinally, and of substantially the same length as the ordinary fish or clamp plate. The plate 10 bears against the web portions of the rails, represented conventionally at 11 and 12, and is apertured to receive holding pins or bolts 13, the latter spaced at the usual distances, and extending through the apertures for the usual clamp bolts.
The ordinary bolt apertures through the rail webs are thus utilized to receive the bolts 13. a clamp plate 14 being employed at the sides of the webs opposite to the plate 10, and against which the heads 15 of the bolts bear.
At its thicker end the clamp plate 10 is formed with a guideway or housing 16.
Each of the pins or bolts 13 is provided with a transverse slot 17, and engaging PA NTO ome: H. comma orgimees, k H fi f Specification of'IIetters Patent i" Patented Application filedNo ve'mber 14,;1921; Serial mi. 515,025.

.througl-rthese slots is a wedgekey'18,the thinner end ofthe key passing through'the housing or guideway I smaller end the key 18 is provided with a ,plurality of recesses, or L'nqtclies 19-and like- 16,. as shown. At its wise with a plurality of apertures 20 in spaced relation. guideway 16 is a pawl device 22 adapted to engagethe recesses or notches 19 in the FFICE.
Pivoted at 21 within "the wedge keyand operating. to lock the latter in adjusted position.
The pawl memberis provided with an out- I standing pin 23 extending through a slot 24 in the housing and surrounded by a spring 25 pawl yieldablypressed against the wedge key and in one of the notches.
The housing 16 is likewise provided with apertures to receive a cotter pin 26 which passes through one of the apertures 20 in the wedge key and thus operates as an addi tional holding means to the wedge key.
By this meansa simply constructed fas tening device'is provided which firmly locks the adjacent ends of the rails together and prevents them from working loose under the severe strains to which they will be subected by the rolling stock, and containing no loose parts to become detached by this jarring and concussion.
Having thus described the invention, what is claimed as new is 1- 1. A railway rail fastening comprising a wedge shaped clamp plate adapted to bear against the webs of a pair of rails at their confronting ends and provided with a guideway at one end, said clamp plate having a plurality of apertures. clamp bolts extending respectively through the rail webs and likewise through the apertures of the clamp plate, and each bolt being provided with a transverse slot, a Wedge key extending through .the slots of the bolts the guideway of the clamp plate, and means for locking said wedge key from movement longitudinally.
2. In a device of the class described, abutting members, a clamp plate adapted to bear and through 7 against one of said abutting members and having a housing at one end, said clamp plate rand the abutting members having a plurality of registering apertures, clamp bolts extending respectively through said regis- "tering apertures, and each bolt being pro- P vided with a transverse slot, a wedge key extending through the slots of thebolt's and vthrough the guideway of the clamp plate 10 and provided with spaced recesses, and a spring controlled pawl device within said .g'uideway and engageable with said recesses.
3. Afdevice of the class described compris- "ing a-wedge shaped clamp plate adapted to wedge-key extending through the slots of the bolts and through the guideway of the clamp plate, and means for locking said wedge key from movement longitudinally. 25
'In testimony whereof, I affix my signature hereto. l i a JOSIAH H; COLLINS.
