TYPEGALLEY.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Nov. 28, 1911.
Application filed March 9, 1911. Serial No. 613,221.
To all whom it may concem:
Be it known that I, FREDERICK WILLIAM NEUMAYER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Baltimore, in the State of Maryland, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Type-Galleys; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to improvements in type galleys.
One object of the invention is to provide a type galley having a detachably connected head and means whereby said head may be secured to either end of the galley.
Another object is to provide a galley head which may be detachably secured to the ordinary form of galley with but slight alteration of the latter.
With these and other objects in view, the invention consists of certain novel features of construction, combination and arrangement of parts as will be more fully described and particularly pointed out in the appended claims.
In the accompanying drawings: Figure 1 is a perspective view of my improved galley; Fig. 2 is a similar view of the detachable head removed from the galley; Fig. 3 is a plan view partly in section of one end of the galley showing the position of the parts of the head before the same are tightened up; Fig. at is a similar view showing the position of the parts after the same are tightened to hold the head in place; Fig. 5 is a perspective view of the head showing the parts separated.
Referring more particularly to the draw ings, 1 denotes the galley which may be of the usual form or of special construction, and is here shown as comprising a bottom plate 2 and sides 3. The sides have formed on their lower edges outwardly projecting flanges 4 which are riveted or otherwise secured to the bottom plate 2 adjacent to the side edges thereof as shown. In the sides 3 near each end thereof are formed vertically disposed notches 5 the upper ends of which are flared outwardly to a slight extent. In the outer surface of the sides 3 adjacent to one edge of the notches 5 are formed rectangular recesses 6. Adapted to be engaged with either end of the galley is a head 7 comprising a flat bar 8 having a width corresponding to the width of the sides 3 of the galley and of a length to fit closely between said sides when arranged in position. On the outer'side of the bar 8 near its ends are formed laterally projecting supporting lugs 9 having therein rectangular guide passages 10. On the outer side of the bar between the lugs 9 and nearer the center of the bar are formed radially projecting guide lugs 11 having formed therein circular guide passages 12. Slidably engaged with the guide passages 10 and 12 of the lugs 9 and 11 are looking bars 13 having rectangular outer portions 14: and reduced cylindrical inner portions 15. The outer rectangular portions 14 are engaged in the rectangular passages 10 and in one side of saidrectangular portions near the outer ends thereof are formed recesses 16 which provide stop shoulders 17. The ends of the bars having the recesses 16 are engaged with the notches 5 in the sides 3 of the galley and when said bars are drawn inwardly the stop shoulders 17 are drawn into the recesses 6 in the sides of the galley thereby locking the head 7 in operative position.
In order to retract and project the bars 13 and thus draw the stop shoulders 17 into and out of the recesses 6 I provide the reduced cylindrical ends 15 of one of the bars 13 with right hand screw threads and the end of the other bar with left hand screw threads. The ends of the bars when thus threaded are engaged with an adjusting cylinder 18 said cylinder having in its ends sockets 19, provided with reduced inner portions one of which is threaded with right hand screw threads to receive the right hand threaded end of one of the bars 13 and the other of which is provided with left hand threads to receive the left hand threaded end of the other bar whereby when said cylinder is turned in one direction or the other the bars will be retracted or projected to lock or release the head. The cylinder 18 is preferably provided with a checkered or serrated outer surface to facilitate the engagement of the thumb or fingers therewith for the purpose of turning the same.
The cylinder 18 when engaged with the threaded ends of the bars 13 is disposed between the lugs 11 which hold the cylinder in operative position. In order to prevent the bars 13 from being screwed entirely out of the ends of the cylinder I provide a stop pin 20 which is adapted to be engaged in a transverse passage 20 formed in one of the barsl3 adjacent to the outer guide lug 9 thereby preventing the bar from moving outwardly beyond a certain point. In thus locking one of the bars 13 the other will also be locked.
My improved galley may be used in the ordinary manner to hold type set by hand but is particularly adapted for use in connection with type casting machines and more especially for use in connection with the monotype machine in which the type matter is delivered onto the galley with the first line or head to the open end or foot of the galley which is in direct opposition to the manner in which the type should be placed for rapid and accurate handling by the compositor working at the case, or in other words the head of the type matter for proper handling should be at the closed end of the galley. By providing the galley with a detachably connected head as herein shown and described it will be readily seen that the head may be removed from one end and engaged with the opposite end of the galley when desired thus practically reversing the position of the type on the galley and enabling the compositor to correctly rearrange, or otherwise handle the type without danger of pieing the same.
From the foregoing description taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, the construction and operation of the invention will be readily understood without requiring a more extended explanation.
Various changes in the form, proportion and the minor details of construction may be resorted to without departing from the principle or sacrificing any of the advan tages of the invention as defined in the appended claims.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim is:
1. A type galley comprising a bottom, and longitudinal vertical sides having notches in the upper edges and recesses in their outer sides communicating with the notches, a head comprising outer lugs near its ends and intermediate lugs, all of the lugs having passages in line with each other, locking bars having ends outside the outer lugs to engage the recesses in the sides, and right and left threaded inner ends inside the intermediate lugs, and a right and left threaded sleeve between the intermediate lugs mounted on the inner ends of the locking bars.
2. A type galley comprising a bottom plate and longitudinal sides, said sides having therein near both ends vertical notches and having recesses in their outer ends adjacent to said notches, a head adapted to be engaged with either end of the galley, said head comprising a flat bar, supporting and guiding lugs formed on one side thereof, said lugs having therein guide passages, locking bars slidably engaged with the passages in said lugs, said bars having threaded inner ends and recessed outer ends adapted to be engaged with the notches in the sides of the galley, an adjusting cylinder having in its ends right and left hand threaded sockets adapted to receive the right and left hand threaded ends of said locking bars whereby the recessed outer ends of the bars are drawn into operative engagement with the recesses in the sides of the galley to hold the head in position and means to prevent the bars from being screwed entirely out of the sockets of the adjusting cylinder.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto set my hand in presence of two subscribing witnesses.
FREDERICK WILLIAM NEUMAYER.
