IMPROVEMENT IN SHOOEMAKERS EDGE-PLANES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 149,856, dated April 21, 1874; application liled March 2, 1874.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, J osErH H. SANFORD, of North Bridgewater, in the county of Plymouth and State of Massachusetts, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Shoemakers7 Edge-Planes; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it pertains to make and use it, reference being had to the accompanying drawing, which forms part of this specification.
In the said drawing, Figures l and2 are opposite-side elevations, and Fig. 3 a rearend view, of an edgeplane construct-ed in accordance with my invention. Fig. 4. is a side view, showing the blade as turned back into position for being ground.
My invention is an improvement upon the implement as patented by E. S. Snell, on April l0, 1860. In the invention of the said Snell, the blade was so constructed and applied to its stock as to render it necessary, whenever the blade required to be ground, to remove it from the stock. Such is objectionable, as, when so removed, it required great skill and care to hold it truly and evenly upon the stone in order to maintain the requisite bevel of the edge. Being grasped between the thumb and finger, it is almost impossible to hold and maintainit evenly upon the stone. The object of my invention is to remedy this evil, and enable the blade, without detachment from its stock, to be turned back into a position thereon to be readily ground, and, at the same time, rendered easier of adjustment, as circumstances may re quire. This I accomplish by means of the pe. culiar construction and arrangement of parts,as shown, and hereinafter described and claimed.
In the drawing, A denotes the stock, which is a metallic block affixed to a handle, B. O is an adjustable guard, disposed on the front face of the stock, in the ordinary manner. This block is reduced on one of its sides to receive the shank of the curved blade D. There is also formed lon such reduced side a segmental shoulder or rib, a, corresponding in curvature with the curved face of the blade.
The shank of the blade is also made with a transverse segmental groove, b, formed with a like degree of curvature of the rib a, on which it is supported and slides. Furthermore, the blade is confined to the stock by a set-screw, c, which passes through an oblong curved slot, d, formed in theside of the stock, and into thel shank of the blade, as shown in the drawing. I would remark that a curved groovermay be formed in the reduced side of the stock in lieu of the rib a, and the rib a formed on the shank in lieu of the groove. So, also, bot-h the rib and the groove could be dispensed with, and the lower surface of the blade-shank be formed concave, to fit upon the shoulder s, but such would involve the removal of the blade for being ground.
In preparing the blade for being ground,I slightly unscrew the set or adjusting screw, so as to release the groove from its rib, and next, turn back the blade until its rear surface rests.
