UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
THOMAS C. RICHARDS, OF VVINSTED, CONNECTICUT.
METHOD OFSECURING KNIVES AND FORKS To HANDLES.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No.'27'7,932, dated May 22, 1883.
Q I Application filed August 28,1882. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, THOMAS C. RICHARDS,
of Winsted, in the county of Litchfield and State of Connecticut, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in the Method of Securing Knives and Forks to Handles, of
i which the following is a description, reference being had to the accompanying drawings,
where-- Figure 1 is a side View of my improved blade, tang, and ferrule-bolster. Fig. 2 is a view in longitudinal section of same. Fig. 3 is a view in cross-section of the tang on plane denoted by line mm. Fig. 4 is a side view of a knife with the handle applied.
My invention relates to that class "of devices for securing knives, forks, and the like to handles in which the blade and tang are in separate parts secured to each other in the final stages of completion.
It consists, mainly, of a screw-tang having a peculiar longitudinal slot, and of a cast metal bolster and ferrule. V
In the accompanying drawings, the letter a denotes a knife-blade formed of metal, as steel, with the limit of the heel at substantially right angles to the back. A screw, b, preferably of steel,'and having a pyramidal head, I), (rectangular serves best,) is abutte'd against the heel of the blade-in direction and position suitable to a tang. In this position theyare fixed in a mold and metal cast about them,
extending upon the blade, and also to the rear with a cup-shaped portion, 0, the whole forming a bolster, c, (shaped in any required style,) and a ferrule, c, for the reception and protection of the end of the handle d. The screw 1) has a longitudinal slot, b out along the threaded portion, which holds adhesive material, into which it is dipped, and servesto bind the handle after the latter has been screwed upon it.
When ready for use the handle extends under the ferrule, which prevents splitting as the screw is driven intoit. The head of the screw is without slot or indentation, and of a peculiar pyramidal shape especially adapted to prevent blowing when metal is cast about it, and also serving to bind the screw against rotation when it is driven into the handle.
I am aware that screw-tangs have been used in fastening blades to hard handles, and these I do not broadly claim.
I claim as my invention In combination, ablade, apyramidal-headed screw provided witha longitudinal slot, and secured to'the blade by a cast-metal bolster ferrule, all substantially .as described.
THOMAS C, RICHARDS.
