kPATENT OFFICE;
THOMAS PODMORE', OF'W'ILKES-BARRE, PENNSYJVANIA.
FIREPLACE DAMPER.
Application filed October 25, 1923. Serial No. 670,729.
To all whom t may concern.'
Be it known that I, THOMAS PoDMoRE, a citizen of the United States, residing at VVilkes-Barre, in the county of Luzerne and State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and useful Fireplace Damper, of which the following is a specification.
The present invent-ion relates to chimney dampers, and more particularly dampers especially designed for use in connection with fireplace chimneys. y
An important object of the invention is to provide novel means whereby the damper may be secured at the mouth of the chimney, eliminating the necessity of making altera tions in the chimney construction to position the damper.
Another object of the invention is to provide means whereby the damper may be moved to a position out of the path of travel of the flames and heat passing into the chimney.
A still further object of the invention is the provision of a regulating device whereby the damper may be held in various positions of adjustment. j
With the foregoing and other objects in view which will appear as the description proceeds, the invention resides in the combination and arrangement of parts and in the details of construction hereinafter described and claimed, it being understood that changes in the precise embodiment of the invention herein disclosed, may be made within the scope of what is claimed, without departing from the spirit of the invention.
Referring to the drawing:
Figure 1 is a sectional view through a chimney disclosing a damper constructed in accordance with the invention as positioned therein.
, Figure 2 is an elevational view of the damper and its housing.
Figure 3 is a fragmental view disclosing the adjusting means.
Referring to the drawing in detail, the reference character 5 designates the mouth of a chimney adjacent to the fireplace, which is shown as relatively wide to accommodate the damper housing 6 which includes end sections 7, a forward section 8, and an inclined rearwall 9. Flange 10 is formed in` tegral with the damper housing and provides means to restrict movement of the damper housing within the chimney 5 and at the same time affords a surface to be cemented or otherwise secured to the wall of the chimney.
The end sections 7 are formed with openings to receive the pintles 11 formed at the ends of the supporting bar 12 that supports the damper plate 13, the damper being se` cured to the supporting bar 12 by means of the bolts 14; shown as passing therethrough.`
The operating handle 15 is secured to the v damper 13 to permit of pivotal movement of the operating handle to allow the same to move laterally into engagement with the plate 18 that extends at an angle with respect to the section 9, the plate being dis,- posed in a horizontal plane, and secured to flange 10.
Notches 19 are formed in one edge `of the plate and present shoulders 20 to be engaged by the operating handle 15, when the operating handle is swung laterally to a position as indicated in dotted linesin Figure 2 of the' drawing, whereby the damper 13 may be held in various positions of adjustment.
Due to the construction of the plate it will be obvious that the handle 15 may be moved to various positions of adjustment and hold the damper in various positions of adjustment for controlling the draft through the chimney.
I claim A damper including a body portion adaptedto be fitted in a Hue, a supporting bar having pintles at its ends, said body portion having openings to receive the pintles, a damper plate secured to the supporting bar to move therewith, an operating handle having pivotal connection with the' damper plate to swing laterally Withi respect thereto, a
plate having cut out portions, secured to the body portion and extending into the iue, In testimony that I claim the foregoing said out out port-ions defining sh0u1ders,said as my own, I have hereto affixed my signashoulders being various distances from one ture in the presence of two Witnesses.
