7 To all whom it may concern: r
Be it known that I E .N
citizen of the United States, residing at La 7 (Jrrange, in the county of Cook and State of Illino1s, haveinvented certain new and useful Improvements in Dampers, of which the following-is a specification.
. My inventionrelates to improvementsin dampers.
" in front-of the fire place or grate, and. readily accessible for operation whereby to One of the objects of my invention is to provide an improved damper and means for operating same to regulate the draft from a fireplace, or the like. 1
A more specific object ofmy invention is to provide damper operating means, located movethe damper to the desired extent for regulating the draft by throttling or entirely closing the throat of the chimney through which the products of combustion pass.
Other and further objects of my invention will become readily apparent to persons skilled in the art,.from a consideration of the following description when taken in conjunction with the drawings, wherein Figure l is a front elevation of a fire place or grate showing thedamper operating handle.
F'g. 2 is a section'taken on line 2-2 of 7 Fig. 1.
Fig. 3 Fig. 2. r Fig. 4 is a similar enlarged section of a fragment. r V V Fig. 5 is a perspective view of'the damper. In all the views the same reference char.-
is a section taken on line33 of acters are employed to indicate similar parts.
Heretofore damper operating means have been located 111s1de of the fire place and when it 1s deslred to open and'close the damper it has been necessary to reach up into the.
fir place and move the damper, or the arm or lever connected thereto. There isusually a latch or lever connected'to the damper which can only be manipulated by contact with the hand. Such latch is always covered with soot and when the fire is burning in the grate the manipulation of the damper is exceedingly difficult and uncomfortable.
My damper operating handle'is located in front of the fire place and is so arranged that the extent to which the damper has been opened is readily indicated by the position of the handle. 7 v
v l. Specification of Lett rs'ratent r Paten'ted Sept. 17,1918. .7 i 1ipp1icationii1edDeGeniiieiZG,1917. Serial No. 208,722.
In the drawings which I have employed?" disclosing the character of my invention; 10 1s a chimney having a flue 11 and 'a fire place 12.- Thethroat 13 is adapted to beclosed by afdamper 14 which is pivoted at15' and 16. 1 V *The damper flfis preferably a plate lav: iiigaprojecting trunnion 17 at one end and an inner trunnion 18 at the other end. The
trunnion 18 does not project beyond the end 19 of the damper, and on either side of the in position the trunnion 17 is first inserted in the sleeve 23, after which the other end of the damper is brought up in axial position with the sleeve 22 and the latter is drawn out of the socket 24 and may be held' 7 in that position by application of cement, or otherwise. .A part of the damper iS cut away at one end from the edge 25 to provide space for the operating rod'26. An arm 27 is pivoted to two lugs 28. and 29 which form, preferably, integral parts of the damper plate 1 1, and is provided on its outer end with an opening 30. .An arm 31, is secured on the square rod 26 and is provided with a The proreduced end 32 which projects through the opening 30 for sliding engagement with the arm 27 for the purpose of operating the damper. The rod 26 is provided with a bearing sleeve 33, which is insertible in the rear wall 34 of the chimney, and with another bearing sleeve 35 insertible in the front wall 36. Ahandle'37 is connected to the front end of the rod 26 and is spaced away from the front surface of the wall 36 by a plate 38, which preferably forms a part of the bearing sleeve 35.
The damper 14 always preserves a relative 7 position with the handle 37, so that the location of the handle will determine the extent to which the damper closes the throat damper regulator is very convenient to .be used as a means of ventilating the room, in which the grate is "located, even,
when the room is heated by other means, as for instance by hot air furnace, hot water or steam plants. The extent to which the damper is open will determine the amount of used or vitiated air that will be taken from. the room, by the draft of the chimney, thereby enhancing the value of the air by frequent renewal with fresh air in the apartment.
While I have herein shown and disclosed a single embodiment of my invention it will be evident that changes may be made in the structure within the scope of the appended claim. I 1
Having described my invention, what I claim is In combination with a chimney having a V fire place flue and throat; of a damper for insertion at the throat of a, fire-place flue comprising a plate having two trunnions one 0091c: of this patent may be obtained for at each end, one projecting beyond the" end 01' the damper; sleeves insertible 1n the chimney to provide bearings for the trunnions;
a rod passing through the throat of the chimney, at right angles to the axis of the V damper; a handle on the front end of the rod to operate the damper; an arm on the hand. i
