To all whom it may concern: v
Be it known that we, TAYLOR HEINT- ZELMAN, of Sacramento, in the county of Sacramento and State of California, and J AMES G; CAMP, of Oakland, in the county of Alameda and State aforesaid, have jointly in vented' a certain new and useful Improve ment in Air-Feeding Appliances for Oil- Burning Steam-Boilers, of which'improvement the following is a specification Our present invention relates to, and is an improvement in, oil burning apparatus of the general character of that set forth in Letters Patent of the United States Nos. 830,833 and 861,515, granted and issued to us under dates of September 11, 1906 and July 30, 1907, respectively, and its object is to provide means whereby the current of air drawn into the firebox by the exhaust will be divided and diverted and the objectionable noise attendant upon its direct traverse through the door opening be prevented; the air be somewhat heated before entering the firebox; and injury to enginemen and firemen, from flashing .resulting from carelessness or inexperience of firemen be more effectually prevented than heretofore.

he structural features of improvement in an air feeding appliance of the above general type which constitute our present invention will now be described.
In the practice of our invention, we provide a frame, 24*, stantially in contour with the air supply passage, 24, and is secured by bolts or rivets, in the ordinary manner, to the rear water wall, 3, of a firebox, surrounding and forming an outward extension of the passage, 24. This'passage may either be one specially formed in-the rear water wall, or in application to a steam boiler designed for, or previously'used with, solid fuel, it may be the ordinary door opening. a transverse division plate, 25*, extends .across the hood, projecting downwardly from the top thereof to ornear the axial plane of the sanding tube, and forming-a semi-circular chamber having an opening, 25, leading into-passage 24. The rear end of the sanding tube is normally closed by acover plate, 33, which is suspended on a pin, 34, fixed in the rear Wall of the hood,
and which may be swung upon the pin when desired, as in the construction shown in Patent No. 861,515, aforesaid, to uncover the rear end of the sanding tube, 32 for the purpose of introducing sand into the firebox to free the tubes from deposits of carbonaceous material. A dead air space is I invention, relatively to formed between the plate 25*, and the rear wall of the hood for the purpose of keeping said wall cool.
The area for the passage of air through the open portion of the bottom of the hood' at the rear of the bottom plate, 25, and thence to and through the upper air supply passage, 24, is controlled and varied as required, by a damper or regulator, 26, which is pivoted at its rear end to the rear wall of thehoo d, by pins, 26, passing through lugs, 26, on the damper, and corresponding lugs on the hood. By suitable movement and adjustment of the damper, relatively to the axes of the pins, 26*, the opening in the bottom of the hood may be closed, either completely or to any lesser degree, as desired.
A bafile or deflecting plate, 27, the function of which is to deflect the current of air entering the'firebox through the upper air supply passage, 24, downwardly towards the burner, is connected to the top of the frame, 24, and extends-therefrom, in downwardly inclined position, through'the passage, 24", into the firebox. The deflecting late corresponds, in all essential particuars of construction and connection to the frame, 24*, with that set forth in Patent No. 861,515 aforesaid, and not forming, in and of itself, part of our present invention, need not be herein at length described.
The operative advantages of our present rior constructions, in which the traverse of air to the firebox is substantially direct and unobstructed, will be obvious to those familiar with oil burning locomotive practice. The division of the entering current of air by the central sanding tube and transverse division plate, and its retardation and change of direction by the bottom plate, division plate,"and front plate, prevent the objectionable noise ordinarily experienced, and also cause the air to be plreheated to some extent before entering t e supply passage. The front plate bottom plate, and damper also prevent any direct outrush of flame from the firebox, in case of flashing and correspondingly protect the men on the foot plate of the ocomotive from injury therefrom.
We claim as our invention and desire to secure by Letters Patent:
1. The combination, with a steam boiler firebox rear wallhaving an air supply passage, of a frame connected to the firebox wall and surrounding saidpassage, an air feeding hood connected to said frame and com rising a rear wall, a front plate closing the ower portion of its end adjoining the frame and a bottom plate closing the forward portion of its bottom, a division plate between and substantially parallel to the rear wall and front plate, and extending from the top to the center of the hood, and a pivoted damper controlling the opening in rear of said bottom plate.
2. The combination, with a steam boiler firebox rear wall having an air supply passage, of a frame connected to the firebox walland surrounding said passage, an air feed cover plate controlling the outer end of the sanding tube. I
3. The combination, with a steam boiler firebox rear wall having an air supply passage, a frame connected to the firebox wall and surrounding said passage, an air feed hood connected to said frame and comprising a rear Wall and a front plate closing the lower portion of its end adjoining the frame, a bottom plate closing the forward portion of its bottom, an open ended sanding tube extending from the front plate to the rear wall of the hood, and a division plate extending from the top ,of the hood to the sanding tube, a movable cover plate con- 1 trolling the outer end of the sanding tube, and a pivoted damper controlling the opening in rear of the bottom plate.
