OIL-GRATE Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented March 24, 1908.

To all whom it may concern:
Be itknown that I, ROBERT HELD, a citizen of the United States, residing at Randolph, in the county of Clay and State of Missouri, have invented .certain new and useful Improvements in Oil-Grates, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part hereof.
My invention has relation to improvements in oil grates; and it consists in the novel construction of grate more fully set forth in the specification and pointed out in the claims.
In the drawings, Figure 1 is a longitudinal section of my grate on the line 1-1 of Fig. 2, showing the same applied to a locomotive boiler; Fig. 2 is a vertical transverse section on the line 22 of Fig. 1; Fig. 3 is a sectional detail of the check-valve interposed between the supply tank and..,the burners; and Fig. 4 is a sectional detail showing the manner of supporting the burner pipes in position. v
The object of the present invention is to construct a vapor burning grate which will take the place of the prevailing grate constructions utilizing solid fuel such as coal, wood, coke, and the like, whereby not only economy in fuel results since the feedingof the latter can be perfectly controlled, but the nuisance of smoke and dirt will be entirely eliminated; and while herein specifically shown in connection with a locomotive boiler, it is to be understood that I do not limit its application thereto, but may employ the invention with any type of boiler whatsoever.

The feed pipe a communicates with a header H, of U-shaped form located at the front end of the fire-box chamber of the boiler, said header being provided with'a series of burner pipes p closed at their free ends which extend rearwardly to the back of the fire box, the pipes p forming collectively a construction comparableto a grate. The grate thus formed is provided with nozzles or burner tips I) distributed along the inner faces of the pipes 71, the several tips pointing inwardly into the chamber of the fire box. The grate formed in the manner: aforesaid extends not only along the bottom of the fire-box but substantially half-way up along the sides thcre0f, so that the flamesor jets issue along three walls, flowing toward the center and thence rearwardly through the life tubes of the boiler as shown by the arrows in 1. The pipes 7) are supported on saddles '1) cast preferably in the form shown, the saddles being provided with depressions by which the individual pipes p of the grate are received (Fig. 4) so that no displacement of the pipes is possible and a rigid and yet a light construction is the result.
The size and intensity ofthe flame jets is controlled by the rate ofdischarge of the oil or hydrocarbon past the valve V, which rate can of course be regulated with the greatest nicety.
Having described my invention what I claim is:
A vapor-burning grate for locomotive boilers comprising a hollow terminal U- shaped header disposed in a vertical plane at the front of the fire-box, a series of rearl wardly extending burner pipes communicatlectively forming the bottom and sides of the ROBERT HELD.
