A. WENGER ADJUSTABLE HAT LINING Filed .Dec. 26. 1923 A TTORNEYS Patented June 10, 1924.
UNITED STATES AARON WENGER. OF BROOKLYN, YO'RK.
ADJUSTABLE HAT LINING.
Application filed. December 26, 1923.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, AARON WENGER, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of the city of New York, borough of Brooklyn, in the county of Kings and State of New York, have invented a new and Improved Adjustable Hat Lining, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact de scription.
This invention relates to wearing apparel and has particular reference to a hat lining which is especially designed for ladies hats.
The invention. contemplates a hat lining equipped with means for adjusting or regulating the head size of the same, whereby through the medium of said means the head receiving opening defined by the lining when associated with a hat renders the hat capable of fitting heads of various sizes.
The invention further comprehends an adjustable hat lining in which the adjusting means is more or less concealed from view, and which means is capable of ready manipulation for changing the head size.
As a still further object the invention resides in the provision of an adjustable hat lining which is comparatively simple in its construction, inexpensive to manufacture and produce, and which is thoroughly reli able and highly efiicient in its purpose.
With the above recited and other objects in view, the invention resides in the novel construction set forth in the following specification, particularly pointed out in the appended claims and illustrated in the accompanyin drawings, it being understood that the right is reserved to embodiments other than those actually illustrated herein. to the full extent indicated by the general meaning of the terms in which the claims are expressed.
In the drawings Figure 1 is a perspective View of a hat equipped with an adjustable lining constructed in accordance with the invention.
Fig. 2 is a bottom plan view thereof with a part of the lining in section as indicated on the line 22 of Fig. 1.
Fig. 3 is an exterior view of the lining removed from the hat.
Fig. 1 is a sectional plan view illustrating the regulating means in adjusted position.
Fig. 5 is a fragmentary exterior view of the lining illustrating a modified form of adjusting means.
Referring to the drawings by characters Serial No. 682,727.
of reference, 10 designates a hat and 11 a lining which is secured therein in the usual manner. The means for rendering the lining circumferentially adjustable to vary the head size of the hat and which means coupled with the lining constitutes the invention, consists of a strip of material 12 which is secured as at 13 at one of its ends to the lining at the outer side thereof whereby when the lining is applied, the said strip will be interposed between the lining and the crown of the hat. The strip 12 may either be of elastic or inelastic material and has attached to its free end a flexible element 14 such as a string or cord which is trained through an opening 15 circumferentially spaced beyond the free end of the strip. The free end or terminal of the flexible element or cord 14 is provided with a knot 16 which serves to prevent accidental withdrawal of the free end through the hat lining when the lining is in applied position. The length of the string or cord 14 is such that when its knotted terminal 16 engages the aper tured portion 15 of the lining, the head size is at its maximum adjustment. When it is desired to obtain adjustments which will reduce the head size, the flexible elementor cord 14 is knotted as at 17 intermediate its length whereby the portion of the lining be tween the point of attachment of the strip 12 and the apertured portion 15 will be gathered as at 18. The minimum adjustment is gaged by the length of the strip 12 and it is therefore seen that any intermediate adjustment between the maximum and minimum may be obtained whereby the hat will fit head sizes between the maximum to effect a suliicient contraction of the lining when the hat is applied, to retain the same upon the head against casual displacement.
I claim: 1. The combination with a hat lining, of means for regulating the head size, consistof a strip of material secured at one of its ends to the lining and disposed between the lining and the crown of the hat, a flexible element of reduced size secured to the free end of said strip and extending through the lining at circumferentially spaced point with respect to the free end of the strip, the said flexible element at its juncture with. the strip defining a stop for limiting the minimum adjustment of the head size, and the said element adapted to be knotted exterior-1y of the lining for effecting a ciren nferential gathering of a portion of the lining to produce the adjustments in the head "size. V
' 2. A hat lining including means forefi'ecting circumferential contraction whereby to regulate the head size of a hat to which the lining is applied, said means comprising a strip of material secured at one of its ends to the lining and disposed between the lining and the crown of the hat, an apertured portion eircuin'ferentially spaced beyond the free end of the strip, a cord attached to the free end of the strip, trained through the apertnred portion and adapted to be knotted at various points in its length whereby to engage with the apertured portion of the lining for gathering the same between said point of engagementand the point of at taclnnent oi the strip therewith to obtain adjustable circumferential contraction of the lining and an elastic looped element connected to the connected end of said strip and through which the cord. is trained at its opposite end.
