IMPROVEMENT IN GRAlNlNG-ROLLERS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 149,098, dated March 31, 1874; application filed December 29, 1873.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, WILLIAM H. BURNS, of Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Roller for Grainin g, of which the following is a specification:
Figure 1 is a side view of my improved graining roller. Fig. 2 is a top View of the same.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts. I
My invention has for its object to furnish an improved roller for transferring the natural graining of any desired wood to a wooden or other surface, and which shall be so constructed as to enter the corners of panels and work close to the floor, thus enabling roller graining to be applied in places where the ordinary graining-roller cannot be used. The invention consists in a graining-roller made with a shoulder to enable the graining to be done in an angle or corner, as hereinafter fully described.
A represents the core of the roller, which is made of wood or other suitable material, and is covered with a composition of glue and molasses, such as is used for printers inking rollers, or with some other suitable material. The core A. is made with a projecting shoulder or cam, a, as shown in Fig. 1, which should be made with a sharp angle, but may be otherwise varied in form, as may be desired. The composition cover or coating B is, in the present instance, molded around or applied to a core shouldered at a so as to form a corres pondin g shoulder, a, on the covering. The core may, however, be of any other preferred form or configuration, in which case the covering alone is provided with a shoulder. To the oenters of the ends of the eoreA are attached gudgeons, which enter and work in eyes in the ends of the forks or branches of the forked handle 0, as shown in Figs. 1 and 2. The shoulder of the roller enables the graining to be done close to the edge or corner of a panel, or close to the floor, or in any other corner or angle.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patout-- A graining-roller having a suitable core, A, and the elastic covering B, provided with the projection or shoulder a, substantially as and for the purpose described.
WILLIAM H. BURNS.
