IVILLIAM M. P. BOIVEN, OF PROVIDENCE, RIIODE ISLAND.
CARBUN-HOLDER FOR MANIFOLD TYPE-WRITING.
SPECIFIQA'IION forming part of Letters Patent N 0. 642,076, dated January 30, 1900.
Application filed August 11. 1899. Serial No, 726,955. (No model-l T0 aZZ whom it nut/y concern:
Be it known that 1, WILLIAM M. P. BOWEN, a citizen of the United States, residing at the city of Providence, in the county of Providence and State of Rhode Island, have invented a certain new and useful Carbon-Holder for Manifold TypelV1-iting, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to manifold type-writing by providing a carbon-holder in which the paper sheet and the carbon sheet or the alternatelyarrauged paper and carbon sheets are quickly, easily, practicably, and readily placed and removed in a simple holder without any fastening between the holder and its contents, in which such paper and carbon sheets are held together by the ordinary pressure of the type-writer roller and attachments against the type-writer platen, in which such paper and carbon sheets are held in place by a straight flap formed from and extending along the top of the rectangular back sheet forming the back of the holder, in combination with and fastened to and forming a part of a flap or flaps formed from and extending along the upper larger portion only of the marginal side or sides of such back sheet forming the back of the holder, and such side flap or flaps being provided with indentations to allow space for the even roll of the holder and contents, all securing the paper sheet and the carbon sheet on the alternately-arranged paper and carbon sheets closely and evenly together and providing for even and accurate manifold type-writing.
My invention also provides for Writing at different times at the same position up or down the page by using a numbered writingscale upon such side flap or flaps and back sheet, and it provides for shifting the carbon sheet or sheets up or down slightly,so as to use the different portions of the carbon sheet or sheets at the diiferent impressions by using a shifting scale at the foot of such back sheet forming the back of the holder.
I attain these objects by the mechanism illustrated in the accompanying drawing, in which a represents in the holder its rectangular back sheet, constructed of smooth hard paper or cardboard or other material readily rolled, forming the back of the holder and presenting a firm surface to secure a good impression when the type strikes against the intervening contents of the holder. In combination with, folded over from the top of such back sheet a and formed from the same sheet, whether ofthe same ora different thick ness, and extending along the top of such back sheet, is the flap l), in combination with and permanently fastened at the corner or corners c to a side flap or flaps d. The side flap dis or the side flaps d are folded over V from the side or sides of such back sheet a and is or are formed from the same sheet, whether of the same or different thickness. Such side flap or flaps cl extend along the upper larger portion only of the marginal side or sides of such back sheet a, forming the back of the holder, and such side flap or flaps d is or are provided with one or more indentations c to extend slightly the curved length of the flap or flaps (1 when rolled and used in the type-writer and to allow space for the even roll of the holder and contents when rolled in the type-writer between the roller and platen, and to secure even and accurate manifold type-Writing. All the foregoing is substantially as set forth in the accompanying drawing.
In combination with all the foregoing and substantially as set forth in the accompanying drawing, f represents the Writing-scale, formed of short lines all parallel with the top of and printed or placed upon the face of the side flap or flaps d, extending over upon the face of the back sheet a at the indentation or indentations e and numbered, beginning at and down from the top of the face of said side flap or flaps cl, and providing for the operator to write at different times at the same position up or down the page.
In like combination with all the foregoing and substantially as set forth in the accompanying drawing, 9 represents the shifting scale, formed of one or more lines parallel with the foot of the back sheet of the holder a, printed or placed upon the face of and near to the foot of such back sheet a, extending partly or entirely across the face of such back sheet a, near its foot, and providing for the operator to gage the shifting of the carbon sheet or sheets up or down at different times, so as to present a different surface of such carbon sheet or sheets.
What I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States, is
1. The combination of a rectangular back sheet forming the back of a carbon-holder for manifold type-writing, with a straight flap folded over and formed from the top of such back sheet, extending along the top of such back sheet, and permanently fastened at the corner or corners to a side flap or flaps, the latter folded over and formed from the side or sides of such back sheet, extending along the upper larger portion only of the marginal side or sides of such back sheet forming the back of the holder, and provided With one or more indentations, all Without any fastening between the holder and its contents, and all providing for quick, easy, even and accurate manifold type-writing, all substantially as set forth.
2. The combination of a rectangular back sheet forming the back of a carbon-holder for manifold type-writing, and of a straight flap folded over, formed from and extending along the top of such back sheet, permanently fastened at the corner or corners to a side flap or flaps folded over, formed from and extending along the upper larger portion only of the marginal side or sides of such back sheet, provided with one or more indentations, with a Writing-scale composed of short lines all parallel with the top of the holder, printed or placed upon the face of the side flap or flaps, extending over upon such back sheet at such indentations, numbered beginning at and down from the top of the face of such side flap or flaps, for the purpose of providing for writing, at different times, at the same position up or down the page, and with a shifting scale, composed of one or more lines parallel with the foot of such back sheet, printed or placed upon the face of and near to the foot of such back sheet, extending partly or entirely across the face of such back sheet near its foot, for the purpose of providing a gage for the shifting of the carbon sheet or sheets up or down at different times to receive the type-impressions, and all providing for quick, easy, even and accurate manifold type-Writing, substantially as described.
