ARTHUR J. FARMER, OF DETROIT, MICHIGAN.
PAPER FOR USE IN TYPE-WRITTEN WORK TO OBTAIN MANIFOLD COP IES.
Patented Feb. 11, 1908.
Application filed May 4. 1904- Serial No. 2063301.
have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Paper for Use in Type-Writ ten Work to Obtain Manifold Copies; and declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the same, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it pertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying .drawings, which form a part of this specification.
My invention relates in general to writing paper and more particularly to a sheet of patype-written matter.
It is customary when it is desired to produce duplicate copies of typewritten matter to interpose a sheet of carbon paper between two sheets of blank paper, the three sheets being then inserted between the platen and copying ribbon. The original copy is made on the outer sheet by the t e forcing the ribbon against the same, whi e the second copy is made by the carbon paper upon the inner sheet owing to the impact of the type transmitted through the outer sheet. This method is objectionable as it requires considerable time to arrange by hand the superposed blank sheets and interposed carbon paper and then insertin the series of sheets in the type-writing mac ine. The handling of the carbon paper soils the hands of the operator and a so frequently soils the inner sheet of blank paper when the series of sheets are placed around the platen.
It has been proposed heretofore to obviate the use of carbon paper in making duplicate copies of type-written matter by surrounding the platen of the typewriter with a covering impregnated with coloring matter and providing a roll of a continuous transparent sheet of paper which is moved around the platen coincidently' with the movement of separate sheets of the usual ribbon an the continuous sheet of paper. Duplicate copies of the matter written upon the successive separate sheets are impressed upon the continuous sheet from the copying material around the platen. This method is objectionable in that all transparent copies are on a continuous sheet wound around a roller thereby necessitating the continuous sheet being cut into pieces corresponding with the separate sheets on aper inserted between order that corrections may be made in the duplicate copies and in order that such duplicate copies may be filed.
The primary object of my invention is to provide a sheet of paper upon which duplicate copies of typewritten matter may be made without the use of interposed carbon paper, the two copies being made on superposed portions of the sheet of paper such portions being detachably secured together, thereby permitting corrections to be readily made in both copies and facilitating the filing; of one copy owing to its being on a piece of paper of convenient size for handling.
A further object of my invention is to provide a sheet of writing paper upon which duplicate copies of typewritten matter may be made, which will be simple in construction, inexpensive in manufacture, and eflicient in use.
My invention generally described consists in a sheet of writing paper comprising two superposed portions detachably secured together, the under portion being transparent so that characters impressed upon the back thereof may be read through the same. My invention will be more fully described hereinafter with reference to the accompanying drawing in which the same is illustrated as embodied in two convenient and practical forms, and in which,--
' Figure 1 isa plan view of a sheet of paper embodying my invention before being folded; Fig. 2 a perspective view of the sheet of paper when folded preparatory to inserting the same in a typewriter, and Fig. 3 a plan view of a modification.
Similar reference characters are used to designate similar parts in the several figures of the drawing.
Referring more particularly to Figs. 1 and A 2, reference character A indicates one portion of a sheet ofpaper which may be substantially opaque, translucent, or of any suitable character for receiving impressions from the type of a machine of any usual or ordinary construction. Detachably secured to the portion A is a transparent portion'B, the two portions together constituting a sheet of paper adapted to be inserted with the two portions super osed, in a typewriting machine around t e platen thereof.
The platen of the typewriter in which my invention is to be used must be provided with a copying material, such for .instance as a ribbon impregnated with pigment or other coloring matter secured around the surface thereof. The sheet of paper is so inserted in the machine that the transparent portion B underlies the portion A and engages the copying surface on the platen.
After the insertion of a sheet of paper embodying my invention the typewriter is operated in the usual manner which results in simultaneous impressions corresponding to the type being made upon both portions of the sheet, one on the portion A due to the type forcing the usual ribbon against the same, and the second copy being produced on the back of the transparent portion B owing to the impact of the type being transmitted through the two portions of paper to the platen.
The two portions of the sheet are detachably secured together so that after the sheet of paper has been removed from the machine the two copies may be separated, the original on the portion A of the sheet for transmission and the duplicate copy on the transparent portion to be filed for record. The two portions of the sheet may be detachably secured together in any suitable way, such for instance as by providing a line of perforations or indentations between the two portions as indicated in Figs. 1 and 2, or by merely securing the two portions together by an adhesive made and reference character B indicating the transparent portion.
From the foregoing description it will be observed that I have invented an improved sheet of writing paper bymeans of which duplicate copies of typewritten matter may be produced without the use of carbon paper, both copies being made on pieces of paper of a size convenient for the making of corrections and for filing.
Having now fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
1. An integral sheetof paper consistingof a substantially opaque portion and a transparent portion, said sheet provided with a series of perforations by which the transparent portion maybe readily separated from the opaque portion, substantially as described.
2. A-doubled, integral sheet of paper, consistingo'f a substantially opaque portion, and a transparent portion, contacting with each other when folded, said paper provided with a series of perforations along the fold whereby the transparent portion may'be readily separated from the opaque portion, substantially as described.
In testimony whereof, I sign this specification in the presence of two witnesses ARTHUR J. FARMER. Witnesses: I
