GUIDE PLATE FOR CORRECTION TYPE.
APPLICATION FILED MAY 7. 1907.

JEFFERSON ARTHUR GARFIELD HARTON, OF NEW YORK, N. Y.
GUIDE-PLATE FOR CORRECTION-TYPE.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented March 3, 1908.
Application filed May 7. 1907 Serial No. 372.450.
T 0 all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JEFFERSON ARTHUR GARFIELD HARTON, a citizen of the United States, residing in New York, in the borough of Brooklyn, county of Kings, and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Guide-Plates for CorrectionType, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to an improved guide-plate for the correctiontype used in correcting type or words in type-written documents; and for this purpose the invention consists of a guide-plate for the correctiontype, which consists of a plate of celluloid or other suitable material provided with a longitudinal slot, said longitudinal slot having an opening transversely of said slot for guiding the shank of the correction-type.
The invention consists further of a rectangular plate of celluloid or other suitable material which is provided with ways and a shiitable plate in the same and provided with a heel used as a handle, a longitudinal slot, and a rectangular opening transversely to the same, as willbe fully described hereinafter and finally pointed out in the claims.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 represents a perspective view of my improved guide-plate for the correction-type for typewritings, Fig. 2 is a vertical trans verse section showing the use of the plate in connection with a correction-type, Fig. 3 is a perspective view of a modified construction in which the guide-plate is shiitable in a suitable guide-frame, Fig. 4 is a transverse section on line 4, 4, Fig. 8, and Fig. 5 is a longitudinal section on line 5, 5, Fig. 3.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts throughout the several figures.
Referring to the drawings, a represents a guide-plate for the correction-type which is used in correcting typewritten documents either by inserting a letter or character or words in the same without replacing the doc uments in the typewriting machine. The guide-plate a is made of celluloid or other suitable material and provided with a longitudinal slot 1) which serves for locating the position of the type or word to be corrected.
The longitudinal slot is provided with a transverse slot b of rectangular shape, which corresponds in size to the shank of the type, so that when the type is placed in the same it is guided exactly to the point where the type is to be printed. By cutting the transverse slot b intermediately of the length of the longitudinal slot, it is possible to see through the latter slot at both sides of the former and thereby determine the point where the letter should be placed. The shanks of the correction-type are made of the same size and cor respond to the transverse opening in the guide-plate a.
When more than one type is to be corrected, or a word is to be inserted in a typewritten document, the guide-plate a is supported in a fiat oblong guide-frame d which is provided with a longitudinal guide-s1ot having grooved edges d in which. the guide-plate is guided, as shown in Figs. 4 and 5. Thus both the guide-frame and the guide-plate lie in the same plane. In this case the guideplate is provided w ith a heel h which serves as a handle for moving the guide-plate in the guide-frame. This permits the quick insertion of several type at the required location.
The advantage of my improved guide-plate for correction-type for typ e-writings are that corrections can be easily made at the required location without separating the sheets of documents from each other and replacing them in the typewriter; that an outfit of correction-type and guide-plates forms a convenient accessory for typewriting machines; and that an outfit can be furnished at a comparatively low price and saves a great deal of time in correcting typewrittendocuments, and especially such which are tied up and cannot be separated into individual sheets.
Having thus described myinvention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent:
1. The combination, with a guide-frame having a longitudinal slot with grooved edges, of a guide-plate having its edges movable in the grooves of said slot said guideplate being provided with a longitudinal slot,
and a type-guiding opening cut in said slot intermediately of the length of the latter.
2. The combination, with a guide-frame having a longitudinal slot with grooved edges, of a guide-plate having its edges movable in the grooves of said. slot, said guidemy invention, 1 have signed my name in plate being pro ided With a, longitudinlal slot presence of two subscribing witnesses. ant a t e 'u1 in 0 ening iI1tQI111G(iLt6 1 x Y of the l iitfi of sail l stmzimed slot, and JhFFERbOh ARTHUR GARFIELD HARTON' 5 handle for the guide-plate by which it is Htnesses:
shifted in the guide-frame. PAUL GOEPEL,
In testimony, that I claim the foregoing as HENRY J. SUTIRBIERQ
