COMBINED TABLET-HOLDER AND HAND-STAMP.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 228,592, dated June 8, 1880.

To all whom t may concern:

Be it known that I, JOHN F. BARROWS, a citizen of the United States, residing at Lincoln, in the county of Logan and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Combined Tablet-Holder and Hand- Stamp; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to letters or gures of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification, and in which- FigureJ 1 is a longitudinal section, showing in dotted lines the movement of the stamp from the inking-pad onto the tablet-holder; Fig. 2, an end perspective view with the stamp raised.

My invention relates to certain new and usefulimprovements in a combined tablet or equiv alent paper holder and hand-stamp, arranged in a novel but simple manner, whereby a person can print note, letter, or bill heads, statements, envelopes, or other articles with ease and accuracy.

To this end the invention consists in a tablet-holder having` arranged at one end thereof aninking-pad receptacle, forming a guide for the paper or other article to be printed or stamped, in combination with a pivoted or hinged stamp connected thereto and adapted to be brought over directly in front of said receptacle for stamping or printing the paper or other article placed on said holder, all as will be hereinafter fully described.

In the drawings, A represents a tablet or equivalent paper holder for the reception of the paper or other articles to be printed or printed and written upon. B represents a box secured upon or to one end thereof, for the reception of the usual inking-pad C; and D represents a cover therefor, having secured upon its inner face a stamp, E, by screws e, or other equivalent devices. The cover D is provided with a handle, d, and in the present iny stance is connected to the box by a bail, F, centrally pivoted to the cover, and also pivoted to the front upper edge of the box, all as clearlyshown in Fig. 2.

By the above-described arrangement of pivoting the cover or stamp-holder to the box or receptacle containing the inking -pad it is adapted to be moved in the path of a circle and brought over in front of the box, for printing or stamping the paper or other article placed upon the tablet or other paper holder, the front side of the box forming a guide or holder, against which the paper rests.

The stamp always strikes' the article placed upon the holder so as to print yexactly in the right position, and when not in use is always out of the way, covering the inking-pad, and thus excluding dust therefrom, while it is always inked and ready for immediate use.

WVhile the invention is generally useful for stamping or printing various articles, it is more especially designed for printing or stamping` letter-heads upon the paper as it is to bewritten upon, so that in case a letter is not finished o n one sheet it will not be necessaryto print more, but write from top of the succeeding sheets until the letter is nished, thus saving paper and leaving the letter or written article more neat and finished by having but one printed heading.-

When one tablet is used up it can be replaced by another one; and in case the stamp requires to be changed it can be readily removed and replaced by a new one.

I do not wish to be limited to any particular arrangement for securing the stamp to the inking-pad receptacle, as it may be secured to it in various ways so as to be brought over the paper or article to be printed.

It will be also observed that the stamp, by having the bail pivoted thereto, can be turned over on the bail when it is desired to clean it.

I am aware that a hand-stamp in which the stamp-head is pivoted between two bars at one end, which at the other are pivoted to the base-plate between the stamping-pad and the inking-pad, so that as the stamp rises up from one pad it swings over to the other, and vice versa, is old, and such I do not Wish to be understood as claiming as. of my invention.
