UNITED 'STATES 'PATENT OFFICE,
RICHARD c. HARRIS, JR., or RoSIILLE, New JERSEY.
MARKING-STAM P.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 484,534, dated October 18, 1892.
Application filed February 4, 1892. Serial No. 420.257. (No model.)
To a/ZZ Awhom it may concern:
Be it known that I, RICHARD C. HARRIS, J r., a cltizen of the United States, and a resident of Roselle, in the county ot' Union and State of New Jersey, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Marking-Stamps, of which the following is a specification.
This invention has reference to an improved hand marking-stamp, by which packages or any articles of manufacture can be readily marked with figures, letters, or other characters in a quick and effective manner, the characters which are not printing being continuously supplied with ink, so as to be ready for printing whenever required; and the invention consists of a marking-stamp composed of a rigid base-plate provided with a sectorshaped recess and curved lugs at each side of the recess, an upright handle attached to the center of the base-plate, an inking-pad arranged at the top of the base-plate and also provided with a recess of corresponding shape to the recess of the base-plate, and a marking-plate having radial arms and intermediate recesses, each arm being provided at the under side with raised characters and at the upper side with the corresponding indicating character, the marking-plate being separated from the pad by a suitable spring-plate and provided with a hollow hub havingagrooved or rimmed upper end, so as to be grasped by the fingers and turned on the upright handle or spindle until the required letter or character is placed over the recess of the base-plate, so as to be ready for printing.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure l represents a perspective view of my improved marking-stamp, showing the same ready for printing. Fig. 2 is a vertical central section of the same; and Fig. 3 is a planview of the same, partly in horizontal section, on line 3 Fig. 2.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts.
Referring to the drawings, A represents the base-plate of my improved marking-stamp, which is preferably made of sheet-brass or other suitable sheet met-al. The base-plate A is provided with a sector-shaped recess c and at both sides of said recess with curved projecting lugs d.
0n the base-plate A is placed an inkingpad B, which is provided with a recess of corresponding shape with the recess of the baseplate and registering therewith. To the center of the base-plate is applied a fixed upright spindle C, having an eye-shaped handle C at its upper end, through which the finger of the hand for operating the stamp is passed. On the spindle C is guided the 'nollow hub D of the marking-plate D, which marking-plate is provided with recesses extending from the circumferences inwardly and with arms CZ between said recesses, which arms are provided on the under Side with raised iigures or characters (l and at the upper surface with gures or" characters corresponding to the raised igures or characters at the under side of the arms of the marking-plate D. The indicating figures, letters, or characters on the upper Surface of the marking-'plate are painted, branded, or in any other suitable manner applied to the same. y
Between the pad and the marking-plate D is interposed a suitable spring-plate E, which serves to move the marking-plate away from the pad when the pressure on the same is relaXed. The hub D has a milled head or band D2 at its upper end.
My improved marking-stamp is operated as follows: The foretinger is placed through the handle of the spindle C, so that the thumb, forelinger, and middle finger can take hold of the upper grooved or milled end of the hub D', as shown in Fig. l. The hub is turned until the required letter, figure, or character arrives over the recesses of the base-plate and inking-pad. The hub D of the markingplate D is next pressed down by the fingers and simultaneously the entire marking-plate tilted over toward the recessed portion of the base-plate, as shown in dotted lines in Fig. 2,
` so that the figure, letter, or character is printed by the raised type, the base-plate yielding suiiicient to permit the contact of the raised character with the surface to be marked. The lugs a of the base-plate raise the adjoining portions of the same, so that when moving the stamp the moist figure or character is not interfered with. They also serve as guides, by which the marking-stamp can be moved along a straight edge, which IOO serves as a rule when it is desiredV to print a number of letters or characters in one line.
The marking device is specially adapted for marking packages, bags, barrels, and boxes of al1 kinds for shipment, also for marking the number of reams, sizes, and Weights4 of bundles or rolls of paper. It may also be used for printing show-cards, notices, signs, tickets, or tags, announcements, bulletins, marking drawers or shelves, or any other article to which figures, letters, or characters have to be applied.
Having thus4 described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patentl. The combination, withan upright spindle having a handle at its upper end, of a base-plate attached to said spindle, said baseplate having a recess and bent lugs at both sides of said recess, an inking-pad on said base-plate, also provided with a recess registering with a recess on the base-plate, a marking-pad having arms provided with raised letters, iigures, or characters at the under side and corresponding characters at the upper side, the hollow hub attached to the center of the marking-plate, and a spring interposed between the-marking-plate and the inkingpad, substantially as set forth.
2. A marking-stamp composed of a baseplate provided with a recess and with curved projecting lugs at both sides of said rccess,a fixed upright spindle attached to the center of the base-plate and provided with ahandle at the upper end, an inking-'pad on the baseplate, said inking-pad having a recess reglstering with the recess on said base-plate, a marking-plate having arms provided with raised figures, letters, or characters at the under side and indicating characters on the upper surface, a spring-plate interposed between the marking-plate and the base-plate, and a hollow hub attached to the center of the marking-plate and guided on the spindle, said hub being provided with a grooved or milled upper end for being taken hold of by the iingers, substantially as set forth.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my invention I have signed my name in pres,- ence of two subscribing witnesses.
