To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOHN R. MORRISON, a citizen of the United States, residing at Dallas, in the county of Dallas and State of Texas, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Gripper-Creasers for Print ing-Presses and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates tOgripper-creasers for printing-presses. D
The object of the invention is to provide a creaser adapted to be removably secured to the gripper-carrier of a printing-press, whereby the paper in the press may be creased simultaneously with the printing of the same.
With the above and other objects in view the invention consists of certain uovel features of construction, combination, and arrangement of parts, as will be hereinafter described and claimed. T
In the accompanying drawings, Figure l is a view of so much of a platen printing-press as is necessary to illustrate the application of the invention. Fig. 2 is a front side view of the gripper-creaser. Fig. 3 is a rear side View. Fig. 4 is an edge view. Fig. 5 is an end view, and Fig. 6 is a cross-sectional view of the same.
Referring more particularly to the draw ings, 1 denotes the gripper creaser, which preferably consists of a flat metal bar of any desired width or length. On the front side of the bar 1 is formed-a series of longitudinallydisposed V-shaped ribs 2, extending throughout the working length of the bar of the creaser. The bars are to be con structed with one or any desired number of ribs 2 for use in connection with various kinds of work. For instance, when it is desired to crease the covers of catalogues, magazines, and the like, a creaser having one rib will be employed, while for creasing loose-leaf ledger-sheets or the like a creaser bar having a plurality of creasing-ribs will be employed which may be formed six to one inch, ten to two inches, or any number that may be demanded by the trade.
, The inner end of the bar 1 is suitably recessed and provided with an aperture 3, by means of which the same may be readily attached to or removed from the gripper-carrier of the press, by which the creaser is operated. The rear side of the bar 1 is provided with suitable recesses 4 to fit or facilitate the engagement thereof with any form of platenpress. The gripper-creaser is in thickness the difference between the 'Wood furniture and type-high and traveling in the press as the ordinary gripper. When the press closes for an impression, the creaser gets impression from the Wood furniture in the chase or form, and this impression can be increased by underlaying the wood furniture with paper, thus creasing the paper in the press without interfering with the type in the form. The gripper-creaser retires as an ordinary gripper, so that the same does not touch the inked rollers, thus creasing without ink-marking the paper. By this arrangement the paper is creased simultaneously with the printing thereof, thus doing away with one handling of the paper.
A gripper-creaser constructed as herein shown and described may be quickly attached to and removed from a ress, and the use of the same does not at al lessen the speed of the press, and by the use of the same ledgersheets, catalogues, magazines, and all forms of paper backs for books and many other kinds of work may be creased at the same time it is being printed.
From the foregoing description, taken in connection with the acompanying drawings, the construction and operation of the invention will be readily understood without requiring a more extended explanation.
Various changes in the form, proportion, and the minor details of construction may be resorted to without departing from the principle or sacrificing any of the advantages of this invention as defined by the appended claim.
