COPYING APPLIANCE.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters latent No. 83,679, dated. October 4, 1892.

To all whom it may concern.-

Be it known that I, OLOF WV. ANDERSON, of Moorhead, in the county of Clay and State of Minnesota, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Copying Appliances; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, which will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, which form part of this specification.

This invention relates to certaiuimprovements in copying appliances.

The object of the invention is to provide an improved appliance for copying letters which is exceedingly cheap, simple, and durable in construction and which can be used with the utmost ease and rapidity.

The primary object is to furnish a copying appliance at a minimum cost and to reduce labor of and time required in copying letters to a minimum.

My invention consists of a roller provided with aperiphery of soft material having along nap of sufficient stiffness or body to press the damp tissue flat and even on the paper having the writing.

Referring to the accompanying drawings, Figure 1. is a View showing my invention as practiced. Fig. 2 is an end viewof the copying or pressure roller.

In the drawings, (1. indicates a roller of any suitable construction and material and which is preferably solid or otherwise formed in contradistinction to a reservoir-roller. This roller has a peripheral covering of soft material 1), preferably carpet with a long nap, such as Moquette carpet. A strip of carpet or other material is formed into a hollow cylinder with the soft side or nap of the carpet or other material forming the outer contact-periphery of the cylinder. This cylinder is then slipped on the central core or body of the roller and secured, if desired. If desirable, the roller can be provided with end handles, although they are not really necessary, as the roller can be operated by applying the hands directly to the periphery thereof.

The mode of carrying out my invention is as follows: A sheet of dampened tissue-paper is placed on the writing to be copied, and then the cylinder is rolled over the surface of tho tissue-paper by hand and with a slight application of pressure. Thetissue-paper can then be removed and a perfect copy will be taken if the proper ink is used and care taken. The copy can be taken by passing the cylinder over the tissue-paper once with very little pressure. The long nap of the cylinder-covering forms a soft cushion and acts like unto a brush on the wet or dampened tissue, forcing the same out fiat and evenly and into direct contact with all parts of the writing, so that a perfect copy is taken without blotting, running, or blurring of the ink. The soft nap or covering of the cylinder takes up and absorbs surplus moisture and prevents blotting and running.

Having thus set forth my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States, is-

1. As an article of manufacture, the copying'roller consisting of a cylinder covered with a material having a periphery formed by a long stiff nap, which will yieldingly force the wet tissue out fiat and evenly and prevent runningorblotting,substantiallyas described.

2. The herein-described copying appliance, consisting of a cylinder having a covering of soft material-such as Moquette carpet-with a long nap on its outside, whereby when the cylinder is rolled over the writing to be copied all running or blurring of the ink caused by the surplus moisture is prevented, as set forth.
