Description
ELLA N. GAILLARD.
Needles.
N0 149,034. Patented March 31,1874.
I lg/N; EE" inn/ENTER. QM/@7 l iw /%f/MJ U1\IrTr.1: STATES PATENT OFFICE ELLA N. GAILLARD, OF SAN FRANCISCO, CALIFORNIA.
IMPROVEMENT IN NEEDLES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 149,034, dated March 31, 1874; application filed March 19, 1874.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, Mrs. ELLA N. GAIL- LARD, of the city and county of San Francisco and State of California, have invented a new and useful machine, called The Eureka `Needle and Catgut Thread#7 and I do hereby declare that the following is a full and exact description of the said invention.
The nature of my invention consists in making a needle of any size, which, instead of an eye for the thread, has a hole bored longitudinally into the head or larger end thereof' to the depth of a quarter of an inch, or thereabout, which said hole is arranged with a screw-thread. In combination with said needle, I use catgut thread, both polished or unpolished. The catgut thread can be screwed into the head of the needle, and, by means of the screw-thread afore described, is securely held therein, substantially as shown in the drawing. The catgut thread, by being waxed, is the more readily screwed into and held by the needle.-
lhe advantage of the aforesaid peculiar construction of the needle consists in this, that it makes a small hole in passing through the leather, cloth, or other fabric; whereas if it `were a needle with an eye the catgut thread would have to be doubled, and thereby a large and clumsy hole would be made in the fabric.
The advantage of the catgut thread consists in its great strength, durability, and also in its power of resisting the cutting or wearing action of the shoe-button.
The ordinary thread or string withy which buttons are sewed to shoes, gaiters, and boots is soon cut and worn out by the button, which falls off long before the shoe is worn out.
My aforesaid invention can be used for sewing buttons on shoes, gaiters, and boots; also, for sewing leatherl together, or any other fabrics or materials which require great strength of thread.
rlhe catgut thread can be dyed to any desired color.
NV hat I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
As a new article of manufacture, a needle having its`head bored in lengthwise, and provided with an internal screw-thread for the insertion or screwing in of a string of catgut, leather, Wire, or other suitablematerial, substantially as shown and described.
ELLA N. GAILLARD.
