PATENT QFFIGE.
ASSIGNOR OF ONE-HALF HIS RIGHT TO ALLEN L. WOOD, OF SAME PLACE.
IMPROVEMENT IN SEWING-MACHINE NEEDLES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 188,648, dated March 20, 1877; application filed August 26, 1876.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, LOUIS LOESKE, of New York, in the county of New York and State of New York, have invented a new and valuable Improvement in Sewing-Machine 'Needles; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the construction and operation of the same, reference being had to the annexed drawings, making a part of this specification, and to the letters and figures of reference marked thereon.
Figure l of the drawings is a representation of a side view, showing my needle attached to a machine, and Fig. 2 is a side view of the needle.
This invention relates to sewing-machine needles; and it consists in combining together two needles, which are arranged side by side, the head of one of the needles being united to the shank of the other, and one of the needle-shanks projecting above the other, and adapted to be received in the socket in the needle-bar, whereby said double needle can be employed in the ordinary needle-bar of a sewing-machine, having a single socket for the reception of the needle, as will be hereinafter more fully set forth.
In the accompanying drawing, A designates a shank, to which are rigidly attached a short needle, B, and a longer needle, B, both of said needles being constructed, as
usual, with a slight curvature, and pointed and perforated in the usual manner. The shorter needle, B, is an extension of shank A in the direct longitudinal line thereof, and the longer needle, B, is parallel to said shorter 'needle B. The arrangement of said needles may, however, be modified without departing from the spirit and scope of my invention. Thus neither of said needles may be an exact continuation of said shank, in the longitudinal line thereof, or the longer one may be such a continuation and the shorter one may be parallel thereto, and on one side of said longitudinal line. 0 designates the needlebar, provided with a socket, c, in which shank A is secured.
The object of the construction described is as follows: For sewing button-holes and for some other purposes two needles are ordinarily attached to the same needle-bar, and operated simultaneously. As said needle-bars are usually constructed with only one needlesecuring hole or socket, it then becomes necessary to drill an additional hole in said needle-bar to receive the additional needle. This involves a considerable waste of time and labor, beside some expense. I obviate this loss and annoyance by constructing my needles so that, while they answer the purposes of two separate needles in every respect, they require but one hole or socket in the needlebar of the sewing-machine for their attachment. Shank A is inserted in said hole and there secured. The two needles B B are then operated simultaneously by said needle-bar and shank, and the sewing is accomplished.
The invention above .described is applicable to embroidering, and to various other purposes, as well as to sewing button-holes. The needles may be straight instead of curved, so as to be adapted for use on straight-needle machines.
What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
The double needle B B herein described, the head of the needle B being united rigidly to the shank of the needle B, and the latter projecting above the needle B, whereby the double needle is adapted to be applied to the needle-bar of a sewing-machine having but one needle-socket, substantially as described.
In testimony that 1 claim the above I have hereunto subscribed my name in the presence of two Witnesses.
