Description

PATENT OFFICE IMPROVEMENT IN BROOM-NEEDLES.
Specication forming part of Letters Patent No. 119,745, dated October 10, 1871.
'a part of this specification.
My invention relates to impro vements in broomneedles; and it consistsin an oval bar with a point at one end and an eye near the center, with a socket around the eye on one side to contain a knot in the end ofthe thread to hold it; also, a
groove in the other side leading from the eye to the Y heel for the thread to lie in while passing through the broom, so that said thread will in no Way obstruct the passage of the needle nor be exposed to the severe rubbing and Wearing' against the broom itself that is common in the case of the ordinary needles.
Figure 1 is a side elevation of my improved needle, and Fig. 2 is a longitudinal section of the same.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts.
A is the needle, Which may be of any approved size or form. B is the eye near the center of the needle lengthwise. It passes through the needle from one side obliquely toward the heel, and has a socket or cavity, O, surrounding it large enough to receive and hold the knob D so that it Will not project above the surface. E is the groove on the other side, leading from the eye to the heel, to receive the thread While the remainder of the needle is passing through the stock, to protect it from Wear and avoid the friction that occurs when the thread lies on the surface of the needle from the eye to the heel.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- A broom-needle, having the socket or cavity C surrounding the eye on one side and a groove, E, on the other side extending from the eye to the heel, all substantially as specified.
