Leners Patent No. 90,460, dated Mwy 25, 1869.
IMPROVEMENT IN SEWING-NEEDLES.
The Schedule referred to in these Letters Patent and making part of the same.
To all whom, it may concern:
Be it known that I, ABEL MORRALL, of Studley, in the county of Warwick, England, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Forming the Eyes of Needles; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, which will enableothers skilled in the ait to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawing, forming part of this specification.
The drawing represents a side View of' a needle provided with an eye on my improved plan.
The object of this invention is to form the eyesl of hand-needles in such a manner that the thread shall be securely retained in the eye without slipping during the time the needle is employed in its work.
My invention consists in forming, in a hand-needle, a kind of double eye, or an eye having a double curve, which, from its shape, forms two separate eyes, that are connected together, the upper part being, by preference, of an oval or loop-shape, so that the double eye is not unlike the sole of a boot or shoe in form.
The needle is threaded in the lower or larger oi' thel two parts, and when the needle is used, the thread or sewing-material will be drawn up into the head or smaller part of the eye, and be therein contracted and held, so that ordinary tension will be kinsuliicieut to disengage it from the eye.
The disadvantage of the egg-eyed77 needle is, that although more easily threaded than the round-eyed needle, the thread is apt to slip out of the eye, while the round-eyed needle is not so easily threaded as the egg-eyed.
It will be perceived that in my invention the advantages of the egg-eyed needle are combined with those of the round-eyed needle, without its disadvantages, that is to say, it can be easily threaded, and the thread cannot slip.
Another advantage of my needle is, that as the lower eye is larger than the upper, a larger and stronger thread may be used than if the upper eye only were provided.
o., in the drawing, is the needle, drawn on an enlarged scale.
b is the lower and larger portion of the eye, through which the thread is easily passed when threading the needle.
c is the upper and smaller portion of the eye, communicating with the larger portion, b, by means of a narrow neck, d, which is produced by the junction of the two curves forming the inner line of the compound eye.
When the needle is used, the thread is ,drawn up into the smaller portion,l c, of the eye, where it is so locked that ordinary tension is insuiiicient to disengage it from the` needle.
I am aware that sewing-machine needles have hercytofore beenrmade with two enlarged eyes, one near the point, connected together by a narrow slit; vbut this I do not claim, as it forms no part of my invention.
Having thus described my4 invention, p
What I claim as new, and desire to secureby Letters Patent, is-
As a new article of manufacture, the hand-sewing needle a, having the lower portion of the eye b enlarged, the upper portion, c, reduced, and the point of communication between 'b and c provided with a narrow neck, d, as herein described for the purpose specified.
The above specification of my invention signed by y
