IMPROVEMENT IN HARNESS-MAKERS CLAMPS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 148,901, dated March 24, 1874; application filed January 31, 1874.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, J osmn SMITH, of Southold, in the county of Sniiolk and State of New York, have invented anew and useful Im provemcnt in Shoemakers and Harness-Makers (Jlamps, of which the following is a specification:
Figure 1 is a side view of my improved clamp, part of the strap being broken away to show the spring. Fig. 2 is a vertical section of the same, taken through the line .00 m, Fig. 1.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts.
My invention has for its object to improve the construction of shoemakers and harnessmakers clamps, so as to make them more convenient and durable in use.
The invention will first be fully described, and then pointed out in the claim.
A and B are the jaws of the clamp, the lower parts or shanks of which are securely attached to each other. One of the jaws, as B, is made with a hinge-joint at or near the lower end of its curve, as shown in Figs. 1 and 2. The clamping-edges of the jaws A B are faced with lead plates 0, to prevent the wood from breaking away when the clamp is in use.
upper end rests against the outer side of the upper part of the said hinged jaw B. To the jaw B is attached a metallic plate, E, for the end of the spring D to bear and rub against to prevent wear. The upper part of the hinged jaw B is drawn back, to allow the work to be inserted and released, by the-arm F and strap G. The inner end of the arm F is hinged to the lower stationary part of the jaw B, and to its outer end is attached the lower end of the strap G, the upper end of which is attached to the outer side of the upper or movable part of said hinged jaw B. By this arrangement the operator can readily draw back the jaw B by placing his foot upon the arm F. To the lower end of the two jaws A B is attached a horizontal bar or plate, H, for the operator to put his foot upon to hold the clamp erect when in use. The connection between the jaws A B and the foot-piece H is strengthened by an ngle iron or plate, I, as shown in Fig. 2.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent A harness-makers clamp consisting of the fixed jaw A O, hinged jaw B B, spring D, hinged arm F, and strap G, all supported 011 a base, H, as set forth.
JOSIAH SMITH.
