ivroanrs .i. BERG, or sr. PAUL, arrnnnso'rn.
" PRESSER FClOT FOE SEWING- MACHINES.
Application filed January 30, 1922. Serial No. 532,688.
To all whom it may concern: 7
Be it known that I, Mourns J. BERG a citizen'of Poland, residing at St. Paul, in the county ofRamsey andStateof Minnesota, have invented new and useful-Improvements in Presser Feet for Sewing Machines, of which the following is a specification;
It is my primary object to provide a single sewing machine foot which will take the place of several feet, heretofore required for different uses.
More particularly it is my object to provide a presser foot for a sewing machine with novel, simple and efiicient means for securing a gauge or auxiliary prong'in the lower part of the foot. 7
A further object of my invention is to facilitate inserting and removing gauges and auxiliary prongs in a sewing machine foot and at the same time to provide secure fastening means within the foot.
My invention also includes various novel features of construction which will appear and be more fully pointed out in the following specification and claims.
In the accompanying drawings Fig. 1 is a perspective view of my device with a gauge in place; Fig. 2 is a plan view of the same with an auxiliary prong in the holder; Fig. 3 is a section taken on the line 33 of Fig. 2; Fig. 4 is aperspective View of my device showing the holder aperture with the gauge and auxiliary prong removed and Fig. 5 is a detail perspective view of the auxiliary prong.
Referring to the accompanying drawings my improved presser foot is adapted to be secured to the lower end of the reciprocable presser bar of a sewing machine by means of a suitable screw which is inserted through a slot 10 in the shank 11 of the foot. The shank 11 is formed with a projection 12 to which a pair of ears 13, formed on a main prong 14, is pivotally joined by means of a pin 15. An aperture 16 extends horizontally through the foot beneath the cars 13, said aperture being formed to receive tongues 17 and 18 formed, respectively, on a gauge 19 and on an auxiliary prong 20. A flexible abutment plate 21 is secured at its forward end in the aperture 16 and is arranged to normally lie fiat upon the upper surface of said aperture. Cut in one of the cars 13 is a vertical slot 22 which connects with the aperture 16 at the bottom and is open at its forward and upper extremities.
Pivotally-mounted in the slot 22 upon the pin 15 is a lever 23 formed with an eccentric surface 24 adjacent to the abutment plate 21. This lever is arranged to be manipulated to release and secure the tongues 17 and 18 on the gauge 19 and the auxiliary prong 20 in the aperture 16. The eccentric surface 24: of the lever 23 is arranged so that when saidlever is in vertical position, the abutment plate 21 is free to lie fiat against the upper surface of the aperture 16 and when the lever 23 is moved towards its dotted line position shown in Fig. 3 said eccentric surface 24: presses the plate 21 downward in the aperture 16. Thus, as will be readily understood, when either of the tongues 17 or 18 is inserted in the aperture 16 they may be held in any desired position by tilting the lever 23 backward toward its dotted line position shown in Fig. 3. To insert the prong 20 in the foot, the tongue 18 is placed in the aperture 16 beneath the abutment plate 21, the lever 23 being in vertical position, and the lateral surface 20 is placed against a companion surface 143 on the prong 14. The lever 23 is now tilted backward causing the plate 21 to firmly grip the tongue 18 within the aperture 16. When it is desired to use the gauge 19 the prong 20 is removed by merely moving the lever 23 to vertical position and withdrawing thetongue 18 from the aperture 16 when the tongue 17 on the gauge 19 is inserted and secured in said aperture as described above.
Having described my invention what I claim as new and desire to protect by Letters Patent is:
1. In a foot for a sewing machine, a shank adapted to be secured to the machine, a prong mounted on the lower end of said shank, a pin pivotally joining said prong and shank, said prong being formed with an aperture adapted to receive a tongue on an attachment for the foot, a lever tiltably mounted on said pin and an eccentric surface arranged on said lever to partially close said aperture when said lever is tilted.
2. In a foot for a sewing machine, a shank adapted to be secured to the machine, a prong mounted on the lower end of said shank, a pin pivotally joining said prong and shank, said prong being formed with a horizontal aperture adapted to receive a tongue on an attachment for the foot and also being formed with a vertical slot con mating with said aperture, a lever tiltably mounted within saidslot on said pin and an eccentric on said lever adaptedrto, par-H tially close said aperture.
3. In a foot. for a sewing machine, a shank adapted to be secured to the machine, a prong mounted on the lower end of said shank, said prong having an aperture adapted to receive a tongue on an attachment for the foot, an ear projecting laterally from said shank on said prong, formed with a slot communicating with said aperture and a lever having an eccentric surface arranged 'n said slot to be manipulated to grip such tongue in said aperture.
41. In a foot for a sewing machine, a shank adapted to be secured to the machine, a prongniounted on the lower'end of said shank, a pin tiltably joining said prong to said shank, said prong having a horizontal aperture therein, an attachment for said foot formed with a tongue adapted tobe inserted in said aperture, a plate in said aperture, and a lever having an eccentric surface arranged on saidpin to be manipulated'to engage said plate in said.aperturewhereby said tongue may be gripped or released.
In testimony whereof, I have hereunto si ned' my name to this specification. V
- 'MORRIS J. BERG.
