Description

( No Model.)
, I G. TUCKER.
ATTAUHMENT HOLDER FOR SEWING MACHINES.
Pa'tntedAug; 15,1893.
UNITED STATES PATENT QFFICE.
GEORGE TUCKER, OF LOS ANGELES, CALIFORNIA, ASSIGNOR, BY MESNE ASSIGNMENTS, OF ONE-HALF TO ALMON SHOUP, OF SAME PLACE.
ATTACHMENT-HOLDER FOR SEWING-MACHINES.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 503,222, dated August 15, 1893.
Application filed January 21, 1893. Serial No. 459.046- (ITo model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, GEORGE TUCKER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Los Angeles, in the county of Los Angeles and State of California, have invented a new and useful Attachment-Holder for Sewing-Machines, of which the following is a specification.
The object of my invention is to provide cheaper, more simple and convenient means whereby sewing machine attachments may be more quickly attached to and detached from the machine than is possible with the means now in use.
My invention consists in a sewing machine shuttle-slide provided with an attachment-receiving opening or socket, and with a suitable bolt or other catch or securing device arranged on the under side of the slide and adapted to secure the attachment when its fastening is inserted into the socket or opening combined with anattachment carrying shank having a loop on its under side adapted to pass through a slot in the slide and receive the bolt.
It also consists in the special construction and arrangement of parts whereby such bolt is applied to the slide.
It also comprises the attachment adapted for use with the shuttle-slide and the combination of the attachment thus adapted and the shuttle slide and its bolt.
The accompanying drawings illustrate my invention.
Figure 1 is'a fragmental front perspective view showing my invention applied to a sewing machine and having a hemming attachment secured in place. Fig. 2 is a perspective view of the attachment-holder-slide removed from the machine and the attachment receiving slot A arranged and adapted to receive the securing device or loop 0 which is the'slide A to allow the end of the bolt to reciprocate across the slot A (and to be withdrawn therefrom) to engage and secure the attachment fastening device or loop when it is set in the socket or inserted through the slot (and to release the same). The bolt D, as shown is flat and is formed of spring metal and is bent at one end to form an inclined spring member d oblique to the main body of the spring and arranged to reciprocate across the slot to enter the loop 0 of the attachment plate 0 when such plate is placed in position with the loop in the slot A; and by the reason of its inclined face" to draw the plate 0 firmly down upon the slide A. The spring action of the member 01 gives an elasticity to the connection which holds the parts firmly in place and obviates all danger of the bolt accidentally working back out of the loop 0 and thus releasing the plate 0 from the slide, or allowing it to rattle or become displaced.
In order to insure proper rigidity of the connection between the plate 0 and the slide A, the plate 0 is provided with downwardly projecting guide lugs c 0" arranged upon opposite sides of such plate, and the slide A is provided with transversely arranged guideslots 0 6' adapted to receive the guide lugs of the attachment plate. The attachment re ceiving slot A and the guide slots e e are arranged in parallel lines and are of sufficient length to allow the loop a and the lugs c c" to slide back and forth to adjust the attachment 0 to the desired position in front of the presser foot B. Gage marks f f are provided upon the plate and the slide respectively as a guide for the operator in adjusting the attachment to the proper position with relation to the needle of the machine.
As shown in the drawings, the guides a a are formed integral with the sheet metal slide A, by stamping.
Now, having described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. An attachment holder for sewing inachines comprising a shuttle-race slide having a transverse slot extending therethrough, a bolt arranged in guides upon said slide and adapted to be reciproeated across the transverse slot, and a plate having an attachment secured thereto and provided on its under side with a loop which projects through the slot in the slide and is engaged bythe bolt to secure the plate to the slide.
2. An attachment holder for sewing machines comprising a shuttle slide provided with bolt guides and with a transverse slot; an attachment plate provided with a loop arranged to project through the slot; and aflat bolt arranged in the bolt guides and formed of a spring metal strip having an inclined end and adapted to reciprocate across the slot and to engage the loop.
3. The combination of the shuttle slide provided with the bolt guides, the lug receiving slots and the transverse fastening slot adapted to receive a loop therein; the attachment plate provided with a loop adapted to enter the slot in the slide, and provided with the guide lugs arranged to enter the lug receiving slots and a bolt arranged in the bolt guides and adapted to reciprocate across the slot and to engage the loop.
GEORGE TUCKER.
