Description

L. E. LADD.
Screens or Covers for Protecting Goods from Dust.
Patented Ma rch 17 LEONARD E. LADD, OF PHILADELPHIA, PENNSYLVANIA.
IMPRGVEMENT IN SCREENS 0R COVERS FOR PROTECTING GOODS FROM DUST.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 14$,569, dated March 17, 1874 application filed December 20, 1873.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, LEONARD E. LADD, of
the city and county of Philadelphia and State of Pennsylvania, have invented a Screen or Cover for Protecting Goods from Dust and Insects, of which the followingis a specification:
The object of this invention is to furnish a means of easily and quickly covering and uncovering goods displayed for sale in stores, and also other articles, and so protecting them from dust and insects.
This invention is illustrated in the drawing annexed.
Figure 1 shows a plan, and Fig. 2 shows a vertical section, of a screen of cylindrical form Fig. 3, a plan of one of triangular form, and Fig. 4, a plan of one of oblong rectangular form.
The same letters of reference apply to the same parts in the several figures.
A represents the cover or screen, formed of some textile fabric or other flexible material, preferably of gauze or bobbin net. At the lower edge of the cover A is secured a rim or ring, B, of sufficient weight to hold the cover A down. This rim B is most conveniently made of wire, but wood or other material will answer. Inside of the cover A, at three or more points on the ring B, are fastened cords, O, which, passing over pulleys D, are united into one cord, E. By drawing upon the cord E, the rim B and cover A are raised, and upon releasing the cord E, the weight of the rim B closes the cover down against the table F, on which the goods rest.
In screens of cylindrical form, as shown in Fig. 1, the pulleys 1) may be conveniently mounted upon a hollow column, H, through which the cord E passes, and where the under side of the table is accessible may pass directly through it; or in case the table is inclosed beneath, it may pass under a pulley, G, horizontally above the table, as indicated by the dotted line E in Fig. 2.
When the form of the article to be protected is such as to interfere with the pillar H or cords O, a set of intermediate pulleys, J may be introduced, supported by a frame, H, (shown in dotted lines in Fig. 2,) the cords assuming the position shown by the dotted lines 0 \Vhen the form of the screen is oblong, two
sets of pulleys are advantageously used, one set being located near each end, as shown in Fig. 4, and the cords E leading from them united into one cord, marked E Having described my invention, what I claim as new i A flexible cover provided with a ring at the lower edge, combined with eordspassing over pulleys located within the cover, and united in a single cord at the base, as described,'so as to raise the cover from the bottom, as and for the purpose specified.
LEONARD E. 'LADD.
