Be it known that l, Oscan SroDDanD, a citizen ofthe United States, residing at Detroit, in the countyof Yayne and State o'fMichigan, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Sheet-Music Cabinets; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear,`and eX- act description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the saine, reference heilig had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters and figures of reference marked thereon. which form a part of this specilication.

l My invegntion relatesto a cabinet for holding and displaying sheet-music.

The object of my invention is to construct a cabinet which may be closed up, keeping thc sheets of music free from dust when not in use, and to allow the sheet-music to be elevated or projected from the cabinet to select a desired sheet, said sheets being arranged in the cabinet in such a position that ata glance any desired sheet may be found without disturbing the rest, the name or title of each sheet being stamped on the face at the upper end and each sheetbeing slipped into aseparate pocket. The pockets are arranged on an incline. Each succeeding pook et from the front stands higher, whereby the names or titles may be readily seen. l show in the drawings an A-shaped section to'rise and fall, presenting the faces of the sheet-music on twovsides of the device; and myinvention consists in the organization of parts, as hereinafter set forth, and indicated in the claims. In the drawings forming a part of this specilfication, Figure l is afrontend elevation, having the body of the case broken away to show one of the weights for balancing the inner case or raising it out of the outer case shown in said view. The i nner case, S,is ofthe form ofan inverted V, in which YY represent the front and back sides. D D represent the ends of said case, the height of each beingr less than the length of a sheet of music. The bottom boards, ff, are on an incline and meet at th'c center, each part being at right angles to the other. Their lower ends meet the bottoni of theends D D of said case,and, when lowered into the outer case, lie upon the cross-rails or supports F F.

K is a central vertical partition attached to the sides Y Y of the inner case, the bottom edge meeting the upper ends of the inclined bottonisff, as shown in Fig. 3.

t represents aseries of partitions,whicl1llocate vertically in the inner case, passing from side to side, the lower edge of each partition lying` on the inclined bottom f. The height of each partition is less than the height ofasheet of music. The spaces t between the partitions t forni pockets for the sheet-music, and, as said partitions are ofa uni-form height, standing on the inclined bottom, causes the upper edge of each succeeding partition toward the center to be elevated, thus forming each of the pockets t' ou a slight elevation. By this construction the sheets Z of music, when placed in the pockets t', will display the top edge, and by stamping the name or title on the top edge of each sheet it can be readily found, as clearly shown in Fig. l.

I attach to each end of the case A, on the inner face, at the center near the top,abracket, B,With a pulley P, (see Figs. 3 and 4,) and pass over each pulley a cord, c. The lower end of each cord is attachedto the bottom of the inner case at a. (See Fig. 3.) The other end is attached to. a weight, W. The ends D D ofthe inner ease meet the face ofthe corner-strips,d, and slide on said stri-ps as the case is raised and lowered.. It will be observed that by t-his construction the weights W W will rise and fall inthe space formed between the ends D ofthe inner case and the ends yE of the outer case. tSee Fig. 3.)

I form a handle, 71., in the upper end of the central partition, K, and by raising the cover C, as in Fig. 1, and lifting slightly on said handle, the inner ease will rise, as shown in Fig. l, presenting the sheet-music. As the ease rises, the weights Vdrop down,as shown in Fig. 1,and when the inner caseis lowered and cover closed as in Fig. 3, the weights will be raised, as shown in said view.

The weights are to be so adjusted as to balance the inner ease and its contents, or the weights may overbalanee the ease and con` tents, whereby, when the cover C is raised, the weights will cause the inner plates to rise to thc position of Fig. 1.

It will be observed that when the cabinet is closed the sheet-music is free from dust and i'lies, and when theinner ease is raised the musie is brought in full view ofthe operator, and that any desired sheet may be found and removed without disturbing any other.

l. In a sheet-music cabinet,theconlbination of the case A, having the cover and open bottom, the verticallymeciproeating inner ease, S, having the central partition, K, the double inelined bottom, and series of vertical pockets on each side of said partition,with eords,weights, and pulleys, as and for the` purposes speeitied.

2. In combination with the outer ease having the cover at the top and open bottom, with base-rails F and vertical corner-strips d, the inner traveling ease having the central partition with handle and double inclined bottom, with ends D, meeting the vertical strips d, the series of pockets t', located on the inclined bottom,with eords,weights,and pulleys for raising the inner ease, substantially as and for the purposes specied.
