1,482,943 T. R. F. POTTER SALES CHECK HOLDER Filed Feb. 9, 1923 Patented Feb. 5, 192a.
THOMAS E. F. POTTER, OF BROOKLYN, NEW YORK.
SALES-CHECK notions.
Application filed February 9, 1923. Serial No. 617,977.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, THOMAS R. F. Por- TER, a citizen of the United States of America, and a resident of Brooklyn, in the county of Kings and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improve ments in Sales-Check Holders, of which the following is a' specification.
This invention relates to devices for holding checks which have combinedtherewith means for notching the edge of a detachable check to indicate the amount of the sale, the object of the present invention beingvto provide a device of this character which may be constructed cheaply and which will make clean-cut notch in the edge of the check without tearing the material.
The invention consists primarily of a support for a pad of checks carrying a plate adapted to be moved toward and from said support, said plate being provided with a flanged member forming a die having shearing edges and to which is pivoted a cutter member having cutting edges adapted to coact with said shearing edges, said cutting edges being normally positioned above and at an angle to said flanged member or die, thereby permitting the insertion of a chec which will have a clean-cut notch cut therein when said member is moved toward said support.
The invention further consists in certain novel features of construction and arrangement of parts which will be understood readily by reference to the description of the drawings, and to the claims to be hereinafter given.
For tion, one preferred form thereof is shown in the drawings, this form having been found to give satisfactory and reliable results, although it is to be understood that the various instrumentalities of which the invention consists can be variously arranged and organized, and that the inventionis not limited to the precise arrangement and organization of the instrumentalities as herein shown and described, except as required by the scope of the appended claims.
Of the drawings." v
Figure 1 represents a plan of a device embodying the principles of thepresent invention.
the purpose of illustrating the inven- Figure 2 represents a section of the same on line 2, 2 on Fig. l. 1
Figure 3 represents an inverted plan of same.
Figure at represents an end elevation of the same, and
Figure 5 represents a plan of the die supporting plate and showing the die and cutter in plan.
Similar characters indicate like parts throughout the several figures of the drawings.
in the drawings, 10 is a rigid plate having upwardly extending side flanges 11 and the upwardly extending U-shaped rear end 12, in which is clamped in any well known manner the stubs of a pad of checks 13, such as are used in restaurants, lunch rooms and the like.
These checks 13 are provided with a plurality of figures or other characters 142 adjacent to the edges thereof.
In order to indicate the value of a purchase, it is necessary to distinguish insome manner the proper character which is the equivalent of the amount of said purchase. This is usually done by cutting a notch in the edge of the checkopposite one of the characters 14, and until very recently these notches have been cut from the inside of the check outwardly. This method of cutting the notches very frequently causes the material of the check to be torn and leaves a ragged edge.
it has been found desirable, therefore, to cut the notches from the outside toward the interior of the check by two converging slits,
thereby producing a clean-cut notch.
The present invention relates entirely to means of making a clean-cut notch in the edge of the check.
To the rear end of the check support 10, 12 is secured at 15 a plate 16 bent downwardly so that the forward end is separated from the under face of the support 10. The forward end of the plate 16'is provided with an opening 18 therethrough, this opening being triangular in outline with the apex of the triangle near the forward edge of said plate 16.
Secured to the upper face of the plate 16 i is member 19 having an upwardly extending flange 20 forming a die, the forward end of which surrounds the opening 18. and is plrovided with shearing edges on its inner wal The rear portions of the flange 20 are parallel, and between these parallel portions of the flanges is positioned a cutter 21 secured to said flange by means of a pivot pin 22 extending through said cutter and the parallel portions of the flange 20.
The cutter 21 has a rearward extension 23 on which rests the free end of a spring 2%, the opposite end of which is secured in position on the plate 16 by a bale 25 struck from said plate 16.
The spring 2 1 has sufficient tension to normally retain the curved upper face 26 of the front end of the cutter 21 in contact with the under face of the plate 10.- The forward part of the flange 20 is of less height than the rear partthereof, thereby forming shoulders 27 which are adapted to limit the insertion of a detached check between the under face of the cutter 21 and the upper face ofthe forward end of the flange 20.
The forward end of the 20 is provided with shearing edges on its interior wall, which shearing edges are adapted to coact with the cutting edges formed on the forward end of the cutter 21, which forward end is shaped to accurately fit the interior wall of the flange 20.
lVhen it is desired to cut notch in a detached check, said check is inserted between the cutter 21 and flange 20 until its edge abuts the shoulders 27. Then this has been done, with the cutter 21 registering with the proper characters 14, the operator presses the forward end of the plate 16 toward the supporting plate 10. When this is done, the curved face 26 being in contact with the forward end of the supporting pate 10, the cutter 21 will be forced about its pivot 22, causing the cutting edges of said cutter to coact with the shearing edges of the flange 20 and a clean-cut notch will be formed in the edge of the check.
It will be noted that owing to the angularity of the under face of the forward end of the cutter 21, relatively to the upper face of the flange 20, the formation of the notch will be accomplished by the successive cutting of two converging slits commencing at the extreme edge of the check and terminating at the apex toward the interior of the check. lVhen the notch has been cut and the detached check removed, the operator releases the plate 15 and the spring 24 will return the parts to their normal positions indicated in the drawings.
Should the forward end of the cutter become slightly worn after constant use, the edges may be sharpened by removing in any well known manner a portion of the under face 27 of the forward end of the cutter 21, and in a similar manner the shearing edges of the flange 20 may be sharpened by removing a portion of the upper face 28 of the flange 20. v
This makes a very simple construction of check holder with an easily manipulated notching device secured thereto, which, when operated, will alwaysleave a clean-cut notch in the edge of a detached check.
The device may be made cheaply, and easily assembled, and when once assembled, it is impossible for it to get out of order except as its cutting edges may become dulled, in which case a ready meansis provided whereby these cutting edges may be quicklysharpened.
The cutter-21 being always positioned be tween the parallel sides of-the flange 20, the registering of the forward end of the cutter with the shearing edges of the flange 20 is always insuredf l/Vhen the cutter is used to cut a notch in the edge of a detached check, the part removed from the check will be forced downwardly and pass through the opening 18 in the forward end of the plate 16.
It is believed that the operation and many advantages of the invention will be understood readily without further description.
Having thus described my invention, 1 claim:
