Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented May 30,1922.
Application filed May 11, 1921. Serial No. 468,793.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, THOMAS R. F. POTTER, a citizen of the United States of America, and a resident of Brooklyn, in the county of Kings and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Check Holders and Punches, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to devices for holding checks Which have combined therewith means for punching the check to indicate the amount of the sale.
The primary object of the present invention is to provide a simple means for retainin a pad of checks in a holder and in provi ing said holder with a device for punching the edge of a detached check.
Another object of the invention is the provision of a punching device so constructed that in its operation the cutting operation will commence at the edge of the detached check and then continue inwardly to the apex of the punched out part.
Another object of the invention is to provide a back stop to the punching device so positioned as to receive the thumb of the operator and thereby obviate the soiling of the checks by applying pressure directly thereon.
A further object is the provision of means whereby the two actuating members of the punching device are always maintained in register.
A further object is the provision of means whereby one of the actuating members of the punching device serves asa limiting stop for the detached check when inserted between the relatively movable members preparatory to being punched.
Another object of the invention is the provision of means for limiting the movement in each direction of the movable member of the punching device. v
A further object of the invention is the provision of a novel receptacle to receive the parts removed from the check The invention consists in certain novel vfeatures of construction and arrangement of parts which will be understood readily by reference to the description of the drawings and to the claims to be hereinafter given.

this form having been sults although it is to be understood that the various instrumentalities of which the invention consists can be variously arranged and organized and the invention is not limited to the precise arrangement and organization of these instrumentalities as herein shown and described except as required by the scope of the appended claims.

One end of the spring 16 bears against the clip 17 having. formed thereon cars 18 through which the pivot pin 15 extends.
The free end 19 of the clip 17 has a serrated edge and this serrated edge 19 engages the stub the same in 11,12.
The clip 17 is provided with an extension 20 having an opening 21 therethrough by which the holder may be suspended from the belt of the waiter. v v p The walls 12 are formed integral with. a plate 22 secured rivets 28.

One face of the punch 26 has formed therein shoulders 27 and 28 on opposite sides of a wall of the opening 25, these shoulders 27 and 28 coacting with the said wall to limit the movement in opposite directions of the spring plate 24 relatively to the punch 26.
' The opposite face of the punch 26 is pro vided with a f-shaped extension 29 adapted to fit the ll-shaped end of the opening 25 in the spring plate 24.
The lower face of the extension 29 is inclined upwardly as indicated at 30 in Fig. 2 of the drawings.
Normally the broader shaped extension 29 is just above the upper face of the spring plate 24 while the narrower or pointed part is a greater distance from said plate.

, Vi hen a detached check is inserted against the wall 31, pressure may be applied to the plate 24- to move said plate relatively to the support 10 thereby causing the inclined face 30 with its shearing edges to coact with the shearing edges of the opening 25. and thereby cut a V-shaped part from the check.
In this cutting operation it will be noted that the first operation of cutting is at the edge of the check and continues inwardly consecutively until the point of the punched out part is reached.
By punching a part in this manner from the outer edge inwardly the material from which the check is made is less liable to be torn;
To the outer faceof the spring plate 24lis pivoted a receptacle 32 to receive the clippings cut by the punch 26.
This receptacle 32 is pivoted at 33 and is adapted to be moved laterally about the said ivo't 33 as indicatedin Fig. 5 of the draw- 4 mgs 1n order to empty the receptacle of clippmgs.
The spring plate 2-1 is provided. with a depression 84: adapted to engage with a notch 35 in the edge of one wall of the receptacle 32 to lock said receptacle in its closed position.
The punch 26 is provided at its outer end with a flanged thumb piece 36 against which the thumb of the operator is adapted to be pressed during the punching operation, this flange 36 serving as a back stop when the the same.
It is obvious that by providing the back stop 36 there is. no necessity of applying pressure to the pad of checks during the part of the V.
punching operation and consequently the checks are not liable to be soiled by contact with the hands of the operator.
It will be noted that the punch 26 is always in the opening 25 and is guided by the walls thereof during the movement of 24 toward the support 1.0. Consequently the shearing edges of the punch and the wall of the opening 25 are always in perfect alinem'ent thereby insuring the cutting of a perfect clip of sharp outline from the detached. check under all conditions. Thismakes a very simple construction of check holder and punching device whichis very effective in its operation.
ltis believed that the operation and many advantages of the invention will be understood without further description. Having thus described my invention, I claimthe spring plate 1. In a device of the class describedpthe combination of a rigid support for apad of checks; a member movable relatively to said support and having an opening therein; and an immovable punch secured to said support and always positioned in said opening in all positions of said movable member, said punch having shearing edges normally above said movable member, but adapted to coact with the edges of said opening when said member is moved toward said support.

In a device of the class described, the combination of a rigid support for a pad of checks; a member movable relatively to said support and having an opening therein; and an immovable V-shaped punch secured to said support and always positioned in said opening in all positions of said movable member, said punch having shearing edges normally above said movable member but adapted to coact with the edges of said opening when said member is moved toward said support.

In a device of the class described, the combination of a rigid support for apad of checks; a member movable relatively .to said support and having an opening therein; and an immovable punch secured to said support and always positioned in said opening in all posit-ions of said movablemember, said punch having shearing edges normally above said movable member and inclined upwardly to a point but adapted to coact with the edges of said opening when said:
checks; a member movable relatively to said support and having an opening therein; and an immovable punch secured to said support and always positioned in said opening in all positions of said movable I member, said punch having shearing edges normally above said movable member but adapted to coact with the edges of said opening when said member 1s moved toward said support, while the upper end thereof is formed to serve assecured to said support, said punch having shearing edges normally above said movable member but adapted to coact with edges of said opening when said member is moved toward said support; and means immovably mounted upon said support beyond the pad and adapted to serve as a backstop when pressure is applied to said movable member.

In a device of the class described, the combination of a support for a pad of checks; a member movable relatively to said support and having an opening therein; a punch disposed within saidopening and secured to said support, said punch having shearing edges normally above said movable member but adapted to coact with edges of said opening when said vmember is moved toward said support; and shoulders on said punch for limiting the movement of'said member in opposite directions.

In a device of the class described, the combination of a rigid support for a pad of checks; a member movable relatively to said support and having an opening therein; the forward end of which is ll-shaped; and an immovable punch secured to said support and always positioned in said opening in all positions of said movable member, said punch having a V-shaped extension normally above said movable member but adapted to coact with the V-shaped edges of said opening when said member is moved toward said support.

In a device of the class described, the combination of a rigid support for a pad of checks; a member movable relatively to said support and having! an opening therein; the forward end of which is V-shaped; and an immovable punch secured to said support and always positioned in said opening in all positions of said movable member, said punch having a V-shaped extension normally above said movable member but adapted to coact with the V shaped edges of said opening when said member is moved toward said support, the lower face of said extension being inclined upwardly toward the apex thereof.

In a device of the class described, the combination of a rigid support for a pad of checks; a spring member secured at one end to said support and having at its opposite end an opening beyond the pad; and a downwardly extending punch immovably secured to said support and always disposed within said opening, said punch, having shearing edges normallyabove said spring member and adapted to coact with the edges of said opening when said spring member is moved toward said support.
10. In a device of the class described,
the combination of a support for a-p'ad of checks; a spring member secured at one end to said support end an opening beyond the pad; a punch disposed within said openingand secured to said support having shearing edges normally above said spring member and adapted to coact with edges of said opening when said member is moved toward said support;
and having in its oppositev a walled member surrounding the secured end of said spring member adapted to receive one end of said pad; and a spring clip mounted thereon for position.
11.- Ina device of the class described, the combination of a rigidsupportfor a pad of checks; a punching device adapted to out a part from the edge of a detached check, said device including a downwardly extending punch fixedly secured to said rigid support and a movable plate having an opening therein in which said punch is always positioned; astud extending through said movable plate; a receptacle pivotally mounted on said stud and adapted to be moved laterally about the axis of said stud; and means for retaining said receptacle in its normal position beneath said opening.

In a device of the class described, the combination of a support for a pad of checks; a member movable relatively to said support and having an opening therein; a punch disposed within said opening and secured to said support adapted to coact with edges of said opening when said member is moved toward said support; a receptacle having a lateral ear pivotally connec'ted to the under side of said member; and a projection on said member adapted to engage a notch in said receptacle to retain it in normal position.
13. In a device of the class described, the
combination of a rigid support for a pad of checks; a punch extending downwardly and fixedly secured to said support, said punch having shearing edges; and a movable member for supporting a. detached check and having edges adapted to coact with the shearing edges of said punch when said member is moved toward said support whereby a part will be cut from the edge of said detached check, the cutting operation being performed consecutively from the edge inwardly.

In a device of the classdescribed, the combination of a portable support for a pad of checks; and shearing devices carried thereby for removing a V-shaped portion from the edge of a retaining said pad in detached check by cutting consecutively therein two converging slits starting at the edge of said check, said shearing devices being adapted to be held in the hand and actuated by gripping pressure thereon.

In a device of the class described, the combination of a portable support for a pad of checks; and means carried thereby for simultaneously making two converging cuts in the edge of a detached check and removing a V-shaped portion therefrom, the cutting being consecutive from said edge, said cutting means being adapted to be held in the hand and actuated by gripping pressure thereon. 1
