Patented Feb. 6, 1945 UNITED STATES E T OFF-ICE asssnso PUNCH Paul 0. Unger, Elmhurst, 111.; assignor to Wilson-Jones Company, Chicago, Ill'., a corporation of Massachusetts v Application December 23, 1943, Serial No. 515,357
-.6 Claims. (01. 164491) This invention relates to a punch for perforating loose sheets of paper or similar material. j
It is an object of this invention to provide a durable punch formed from sheet metal with efficient means for adjusting a plurality of punch heads laterall of the punch and for securely maintaining the punch heads in position. It is a further object of this invention to provide a punch with interchangeable gauge means so that the punch heads may be quickly adjusted laterally of the punch with reference to different linear measurements. It is a further object of this invention to provide a punch with a. hinged chip pan to facilitate disposal of the chips from the material which is perforated and which will maintain the chips against spilling while the punch is being handled or used. Other objects forated are aligned.v The'base member is provided with another laterally extending channel 13 which is adapted to receive the reversible gauge M. The gauge M is provided adjacent one end with an aperture I to facilitate movement of the gauge within the channel l3. One surface of the gauge I4 is marked preferably in inches. as indicated in Figure. 1, while the reverse side of the gauge I4 is preferably marked in centi- Figure 2 is a top plan view of the reversible linear gauge showing the metric systemmarkings on one surface of the gauge; l Figure 3 is a side elevation of one punch head; Figure 4 is a longitudinal sectional view taken along the line IV-IV of Figure 1; and v Figure 5 is a cross sectional view through the punch. a
In the drawings, the reference numeral 2 indicates a base member to which a chip pan 3 is hinged, as indicated at 4. A strap 5 is provided centrally of the chip pan at the edge opposite the hinge 4, and a latchv 6 is secured'to the chip pan by means of the. strap. The latch has an enlarged head portion 1 which projects through anaperture 8 in the base member and normally overlies one edge of the aperture 8 to maintain the chip pan in closed position. In order'to remove the chips from the chip pan it is necessary only to move the latch 6 laterally so that the enlarged head 1 may be depressed through the aperture 8 and that the chip pan 3 maybe swung freely around the hinge 4 to empty the pan. The chip pan 3 is also provided with a plurality of cushioned feet 9 so that the bottom of the punch will not scratch or mar the surface of the desk or table on which it is used.
The base member 2 is provided with a channel HJ extending across its entire width and adapted to receive a conventional side gauge II. The gauge II is provided with an upturned end l2, against which the edges of the sheets to @be (permeters, as indicated in Figure 2. Either setof linear markings may be replaced by any other markings desired to indicate any special-"linear units. The punch base is provided with acenter line 15, Figure 1, to facilitate setting the. gauge H with the zero marking. on either surface ofthe gauge in alignment with the center, of the punch;
The base member 2 is provided adjacent its rear edge with an upstanding wall 11. A cen-j tral cut out portion l8 extends laterally of the wall I 'l substantially the entire length ofthe wall. The base member is also Provided with a laterally extending cutout portion l9 which extends substantially across the entire length of thebafse member. I f.
A plurality of punch heads 20 are positioned against the. upstanding wall ll. Each punch head 2 O.comprisesa base plate 2i, and a back.
wall 22 integral therewith. A flange 23 integral with the back wall 22 extends forwardly'thereoff at right angles to said wall. A spacer 24 is posie tioned on the base plate 2 I adjacent the backwall 22. A stripper plate 25is positioned on the spacer 24 and extends'forwardly over the base iplat'e2l. The stripper plate 25 is bent at right. angles toform a frontwall 26 and is again bent at right angles to provide a top wall 21 which overlies the flange 23 and terminates adjacent the upstanding wall I1. The base plate 2|, the spacer 24-, and the stripperplate 25 are welded together. The top wall?! and flange 23 are also welded together to providea rigid rectangular frame.
Thestripper'plate 25'and the top'wall-2T are provided with registering apertures 28 and 29, in
which a punch pin 30 is positioned A flange 3| is secured to the punch pin 30 underneath the top wall 21, and a coiled spring 32 encircles the punch pin :between the flange 3| and the stripper plate 25. After the punch pin has been depressed to perforate sheets inserted in the throat between the base plate 2! and the stripper plate 25 the coiled spring 32 forces the punch pin 30 upward- 1y as soon as the depressing force is released.
- The 'base plate 2| is provided with an aperture same diameter to receive the cutting end of the rather than restrictive, as many details may be modified or changed without departing from the spirit or scope of my invention. Accordingly, I do not desire to be restricted to the exact construction described,'except as limited by the appended claims.
I claim:
1 In a punch, a base member, a reversible gauge slidably secured to'said base member, a punch head provided with means adapted to cooperate with markings on either surface of said punch head, the thumb screw 35 is loosened and the punch head may be easily slid laterally of the base member. If it is desired to remove the punch head from the base member the thumb screw 35 is entirely disengaged from the back wall 22 and the punch head may then be re"- moved.
A flat metal plate 31 welded t6 the back plate 22 is provided with a threaded aperture 38 forming a continuation of the aperture 36 to provide it suiiicient thread to engage the thumb screw 35. The bottom edge of the plate 37 terminates adjacent the stripper plate.25.- A back gauge 39 provided with a pair of depending 'ears M is hinged to the plate 31, as indicated at 40, to swing in the plane of the frame of the punch head. The back gauge 39 straddles the stripper plate and the base plate 2| when the back gauge is in the position indicated at Figure This hinged back gauge provided means for quickly and accurately adjusting each punch head to provide a throat with'either one or the other of two predetermined depths. When the back auge is in the position indicated atFigure 5, the spacer 24 determines the depth of the throat and consequently the distance between the edge of the perforated. sheets and the perforations. When the back gauge 39 is in the position as indicated at Figure 3, the forward edges of the ears 4! limit the insertion of the sheets in the throat, and thereby provide a difierent distance between the perforations and the edge of the sheets to be perforated.
The ends of the upstanding wall I! are bent to provide side flanges 42 which add rigidity to 'the structure. The top edgeof the upstanding wall I1. is bent forwardly to provide a top flange 43. The .flange 43 terminates infa hinge 44. An operating handle 45 is secured to the flange 43 by means ofv the hinge 44. The operating handle is provided with a cut out portion 46 which is large enough to permit the insertion of the .users fingers in order to facilitate operation. of the handle. The handle isprovided with a downturned flange 41 around its outer edge and a similar flange 48 around the cut out-portion 46 to provide rigidity and to give the handle a smooth finished appearance. p
Although I have described a preferred embodiment of my invention in detail, it will be underreversible gauge to position said punch head laterally relative to said base member, and a thumb screw operable to maintain said punch head in said adjusted position. I
- 2. In a punch, a punch head including a base plate, a back plate and a top flange formed of one continuous strip of sheet metal, a spacer,
positioned on said base plate, and another strip of sheet metal bent to form a stripper plate positioned over said spacer parallel to said base plate, a front wall and a top wall,'- said base plate, spacer, and stripper plate being welded together, and said top plate and top flange being welded together to form a rigid frame, a flat metal plate welded to said back plate, and a back gauge hingedly secured to said last mentioned plate.
