GARBAGE-DISPOSAL DEVICE.
Application filed June 5,
To allwhomit may concern: v
Be it known that I, LORENZO Dow PEN- nnn, a citizen of the United States, residing at Tarboro, in the county of Edge-combs and State of North Carolina, have invented a new and useful Garbage-Disposal Device, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to a garbage disposal device, one of the objects of the invention being to provide means whereby garbage can be directed into a chute extending into a house or otherenclosure, said chute constituting means for directing the garbage into a container located outside of the structure and which container can subsequently be removed to discharge the garbage therefrom.
Another object is to provide a disposal device of this character having means for normally sealing it so that objectionable odors cannot escape therefrom into the room of the structure into which the device ex tend-s.
Another object is to provide means whereby the chute can be opened readily so as to permit the garbage to be placed therein.
A still further object is to provide a structure of this character which is simple and durable in construction and can be readily applied. 7
lVith the foregoing and other objects in view which will appear as the description proceeds, the invention resides in the combination and arrangement of parts and in the details of construction hereinafter described and claimed, it being understood jthat within the scope of what is claimed, changes 'in the precise embodiment of the invention shown can be made without departing from the spirit of the invention.
In the accompanying drawings the preferred form of the invention has been shown.
In said drawings Figure 1 is a side elevation of the garbage disposal device, the same being shown connected to the Wall of a building, said building being in section.
Figure 2 is a front elevation of that por tion of the structure located within the building. 1
Referring to the figures by characters of reference A designates a portion of a wall of a structure through which is extended an opening B. This opening is adapted to 1222. Serial No. 585,826.
receive a tapered chute 1 which can be of any suitable material such as galvanized metal, porcelain, or the like. The upper end of the chute is preferably beveled as at 2 and is adapted to be closed normally by a cover 3 hingedly' mounted as at i. A bracket 5 is arranged adjacent the top of the chute and supported by this bracket is a bell crank 6 one arm of which is con nected by a link 7 to the cover 3. The other arm is connected by a rod 8 to a foot lever 9 mounted adjacent the floor of the room into which the chute extends. It will be obvious that by pressing the foot lever the bell crank 6 will be actuated so as to raise the cover 3, thus to allow material to be placed in the chute 1. As soon as the foot lever 9 is released the parts will gravitate to their normal positions.
The lower end of the chute 1, projecting outwardly from the wall A, is secured within one branch of a Y fitting or pipe 10 which is held in an upright position by suitably disposed brackets 11. This pipe fitting or coupling 10 may have a vent pipe 12 extended from the other upwardly extending branch thereof. The lower downwardly extending branch of the pipe fitting is extended into an opening C formed in the top D of a garbage can E or other'container located outside of the structure A. Thus it will be seen that when material is placed in the chute 1 it will gravitate into the Y fitting or coupling 10 and thence into the container E. By lifting the cover D the container E can be pulled from under the Y fitting 10 and the contents removed. The container E can thereafter be replaced and the cover D lowered to position thereon. Obviously the chute 1 can be easily cleaned simply by pouring a cleaning fluid thereinto.
As the cover 3 is normally closed no objectionable odors can escape into the room.
To facilitate the attachment of the chute 1 to the wall A the sameis preferably formed with the flange 13 which can be integral therewith and which is adapted to be bolted or otherwise fastened to the wall A as shown.
lVhat is claimed is A garbage disposal device for mounting the other arm of the fitting, there being a space below the fitting to receive a container, a. container cover slidably mounted on the lower arm of the fitting for engagement with a container to hold it assembled With the fitting, a downwardly tapered chute adapted to be mounted in a Wall and engaging the inclined arm of the fitting, said chute having its large end uppermost, a hingedcover normally seated by gravity on the large upper end of the chute to close it, a bellcrank lever supported above the chute, a connection between one arm of the bell crank lever and the cover, a foot lever below the chute, and a connection between the other arm of the bell crank lever and the foot lever.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own, I have hereto aflixed my signature in the presence of two Witnesses:
'LORENZO DOWV FENDER.
