To all whom it may concern.
Be it known that I, EDWIN BRADSHAW, being a citizen of the United States, residing at San Francisco, in the county of San Francisco and State of California, have invented a new and useful Garbage-Chute, of which the following is a specification. in such full and clear terms as will enable those skilled in the art to construct and use the same.
his invention relates to a garbage chute and can therefor, and is an improvement upon the invention disclosed in United States Patent 942854, granted December 7th, 1909. Its object is to provide a chute which will be as nearly air-tight as possible when ready for use.
Another object of the invention is to provide means whereby every door upon the chute, for usually there are a number of doors, one at each floor level, may be locked to prevent garbage from being thrown into the chute at a time when the can has been removed therefrom.
Another object of the invention is to provide means for automatically washing down the interior of the chute, when garbage is thrown therein.
Other objects of the invention will appear as the description proceeds.
In the drawings in which the same numeral of reference is applied to the same portion throughout the several views, Figure 1 is a side elevation of a portion of the chute showing the can hood raised there from. Fig. 2 is a front elevation of the chute showing the can hood in the same position as in Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a sectional view of the automatic valve for washing down the interior of the chute. Fig. 4- is a vertical sectional view through the chute, showing the outside door raised for throwing garbage therein. Fig. 5 is a plan view of a portion of the front of the chute illustrating a means for looking the door, when the garbage can has been removed from the bottom of the chute. Fig. 6 is a side elevation of a portion of the chute, showing the casing around the locking mechanism removed therefrom. Fig. 7 is a sectional view through the can hood showing the manner of making a tight joint with the pipe and with the can. Fig. 8 is a plan view of a portion of the chute showing the pipe connected with the automatic valve mechanism.

It will be understood by those skilled in the art that while only one opening is shown in the chute herein, that as illustrated in the patent above mentioned any number of floors may be served with such a chute as this, a door or two doors being provided at each level, as desired.
The numeral 1 represents the ground level, in which is placed an earthenware or concrete cesspool 20 having a waste pipe 3. A pipe at leads away from said cesspool to the sewer, said pipe having suitable vent at 5, and a perforated plate is placed at the top of the cesspool to prevent materials unduly large from falling into the cesspool. On the top of the cesspool is placed a garbage can 7, said can having an angular flange 8 at the bottom thereof, to give it strength, and having a perforated bottom 9. WVithin the outer can 7 is placed a second can 10 having a perforated bottom 11. The object of this construction is to provide means whereby the water may run off, should the can be completely filled with garbage, or should it be come stopped up so that the water could not run through the garbage.
The chute comprises a cylindrical portion 12 on which slides a frusto-conical hood 13, said hood having an interiorly placed angle, which makes a tight joint with the angle iron 15, secured outside the bottom of the pipe 12. The hood proper slides down closely on the outer can 7 and makes a tight joint therewith. Secured around the chute 12, is a band 16, which forms a support for a rod 17 on one end of which is a lever 18, this lever being connected with a long link 19 on one side, a similar link 20 being connected with the lever 21 on the opposite end of the rod 17. The links 19 and 20 are secured at their lower ends .to the upper portion of the sliding hood 13. At each floor level the chute has an enlargement, as shown at 22. to provide for doors 23 and 24:, the former being hinged on a rod 25, and being lifted upwardly and outwardly whenever it is desired to throw any material into the chute.
The door 23 is secured to the rod 25 and at one end thereof said rod is secured to a cone valve 26 in a casing 27, said valve being put into said casing through an opening in which is secured a plug 28, said valve permitting the escape of the water through a pipe 29. \Vhen the door is raised to the position shown in Fig. at, a pipe 30 also being connected with the water supply, (note dotted lines in Fig. 8) washes the front of the chute whereby it is kept clean.
In order that none of the doors shall be opened when the garbage can 7 is removed from the cesspool, a rod 31 is provided, said rod being lifted up by means of a spring 32 acting on a bracket 33, of which there may be any number up the side of the chute. This rod carries a cone 2st at each door level, and said cone operates to force the arm 35 outwardly, said arm 35 being pivoted on a bracket 36, and being forced against the cone by means of a spring 37, the end 38, of said rod passing into an opening in a lock 39 on the door 23. This rod is held up by means of a spring 32, when the garbage can is in place and the hood 13 is down. hen the hood is raised, a small wire cable 40 connected with the rod 31, and lever 18 causes the rod to be depressed, thus looking all of the doors when the hood has been raised ready for the removal of the garbage can. The result of this construction is that when the can is removed from the cesspool, no garbage can be thrown into the chute. In order that no garbage from an upper door may be permitted to interfere with the wash water pipes, the chutes extend into the enlargement 22, as shown at 12 and have their lower ends cut on a bevel which will permit the opening of the door 24 to such an extent as may be necessary to throw garbage into the chute. The result of this construction is that no garbage can collect on the water supply pipes and become offensive. On the side of the chute, adjacent the doors a defiector plate 42 is provided, the object of said plate being to prevent the garbage thrown into the chute from above, from striking the door 24 when the latter is raised by a person at that floor level.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States, is as follows:
1. In a garbage chute, a chute, a door carried by said chute, a receptacle for garbage at the bottom of said chute, a vertical movable hood to cover said receptacle, means to raise said hood away from said receptacle, a latch to lock said door, and means connected with said latch and the hood operat ing mechanism to lock the door when the hood is raised, substantially as described.
2. In a garbage chute, a chute, doors carried thereby, a receptacle for garbage at the bottom of said chute, a slidable hood to cover said receptacle, means to raise said hood from said receptacle, a latch adjacent each door, and means connected with the hood raising mechanism to lock said doors when said hood is raised, substantially as described.
3. In a garbage chute, a chute, a door therefor, a receptacle at the bottom of the chute, said receptacle having a foraminous bottom, and a revoluble Valve carried by a pivot upon which said door turns to discharge water into said chute when said door is open, substantially as described.
4. In a garbage chute, a chute, a foraminous receptacle at the bottom of said chute, a door for said chute, a swinging deflector plate within said chute to prevent garbage thrown therein from striking the door, a water wash pipe within said chute, means connected with said door to turn on said water when the door is open, and a projection of said chute below said water wash pipe to prevent the accumulation of garbage thereon, substantially as described.
5. In a garbage chute, a chute, a foraminous receptacle at the bottom of said chute, a hood slidable on said chute to cover said receptacle, a rod carried by said chute, a lever to raise said hood, a lock for each door, and means carried by said rod to operate said lock to lock said door when the hood is raised, substantially as described.
