MAIL BOX.

This invention relates to a mail box, the general object of the invention being to provide means for normally holding the box with all parts thereof closed so that the contents will be protected from the elements, with means for permitting the mail to be easily taken from the box or placed therein.

This invention also consists in certain other features of construction and in the combination and arrangement of the several parts, to be hereinafter fully described, illustrated in the accompanying drawings and s ecifically pointed out in the appended c aim.

In describing my invention in detail, reference will be had to the accompanying drawings wherein like characters denote like or corresponding parts throughout the several views, and 1n which Figure 1 is a perspective view of the improved box.

Figure 2 is a similar view but showing the box in open position.

Figure 3 is a section on line 3-3 of Figure 1.

Figure 4 is a similar view but showing the box in open position.

Figure 5 is a section on line 55 of F1gure 4.

In these views, 1 indicates a box which is made of considerable size so that it can hold pieces of mail of large size. The cover 2 is sloping and projects beyond the body of the box so as to prevent the entrance of water or snow into the box and it is hingedly connected with the body, as shown at 3. An opening 4 is formed in the front of the box and a holder 5 is hinged to the bottomof the box at one of its corners, as shown at 6, so that the outer side 7 of the holder will close the opening 4 when the holder 5 has its bottom resting upon the bottom of the box. The holder will assume this position under the action of gravity. The inner side of the box is made of less height than the outer side and the ends slope downwardly from the outer side to the inner side so that the holder can be tilted to the position shown in Figure 4 without interference from the upper wall of the opening 4.

A hole 8 is formed in the front of the box above the opening 4 and a plate 9 covers said bell crank will be rocked and thus the link 14 will be raised so as to tilt the holder to the position it occupies in Figure 1. In this position, mail can be taken from the holder or placed therein. As soon as the finger is removed from the push rod, the weight of the holder will cause the same to drop back upon the bottom of the box and thus its outer wall will close the opening 4.

Any large pieces of mail can be placed in the box by raising the top.

In order to indicate that mail has been placed in the box, I provide an arrow-shaped member 15 which has a slot 16 therein and a pin 17 passes through the slot and is driven into one end of the box. A stop in 18 in this end of the box will engage a re uced end 19 of the member 15 to hold the same in horizontal position, as shown in Figure 2, so as to notify one that mail is in the box. WVhen not in use, the outer end of the member is pushed upwardly and inwardly so that it will drop 1 into a vertical position as shown in Figure 1.

It will thus be seen that I have provided I a mail box which will be entirely closed at all times so that the mail will be protected from the elements, with simple means for opening the box to permit mail to be placed therein or taken therefrom.

It is thought from the foregoing description that the advantages and novel features of my invention will be readily apparent.

I desire it to be understood that I may make changes in the construction and in the combination and arrangement of the several parts, provided that such changes fall within the scope of the appended claim.
