ARTHUR HAGAN, 0?? PHILADELPHIA, PENNSYLVAIEIA.
GARBAGE CAN.
Application filed August 15, 1921.
Y 0 (L55 w/zomdt may concmm:
it known that l, .r'in'rrron HAGAN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Philadelphia, in the county of Philadelphia and State of Pennsylvania, have invented new and useful, Improvements in Garbage Cans, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to new and useful improvements in garbage receptacles, and has for its object to so construct a device of this character that the same may be permanently fixed to a suitable pport such as a fence within a yard, the said receptacle having a chute leading therefrom and passing through the fence or support whereby the garbage is permitted to slide into the garbage collectors bucket.
Another object of the invention is to pro vide a container with an inverted frusto conical bottom from which leads a chute arranged on a suitable decline and normally closed by a cover which may be readily removed when desired.
With these ends in view, this invention consists in the details of construction and combination of elements hereinafter set forth and then specifically designated by the claim.
In order that those skilled in the art to which this invention appertains, may understand how to make and use the same, I will describe its construction in detail, referring by numerals to the accompanying drawing forming a part of this application, in which:
Fig. 1, is a plan View of a garbage receptacle made in accordance with my invention and showing it attached to a fence support.
Fig. 2. is a side elevation thereof the support and fence being shown in section and the lower end of the chute which passes through the fence being broken away and sectioned to illustrate the construction.
In carrying out my invention as here embodied, 2 represents the container of my improved garbage receptacle, the same, when in use, being permanently fixed to a suitable support such as a fence 3 by means of Z shaped brackets 4: arranged in vertical ahgnment one near the top of the container and the other near the lower portion thereof and these brackets are fastened to the container and supporting member by suitable attaching means that are well known. The upper Serial No. 492,440.
end of the container is normally closed by a removable lid 5 and provided with an inverted frusto-conical bottom 6 from which leads a chute 7 said chute being provided with an elbow so that the part connecting directly with the bottom 6 is vertical, as shown at 8, while the major portion is arranged on a suitable decline as indicated at 9 which will permit the garbage to readily slide through said chute and the lower or outer end of this chute projects through a hole in the supporting fence 3. The lower or outer end of this chute is normally closed by a removable cap 11 having a handle by which it may be read ily manipulated. also having one end of the chain 12 attached thereto the other end of said chain being fastened to the supporting fence 3 to prevent the removal or accidental loss of the cap.
In practice the container 2 is fastened on the inside of the supporting fence 3 so as to be within the confines of the property while the end of the chute projects through the supporting fence a short distance outside of the property or into the alley or small street such as used by tradespeople in delivering goods and the refuse collectors. The use of such a garbage receptacle permits person to place the garbage in the container without having to go outside of the yard and does not necessitate the placing of the receptacle in the alley at certain periods of the day and since the container is securely fastened to the supporting fence on the inside of the yard it cannot be turned over by mischievous children or by cats, dogs and other animals.
As the delivery end of the chute is always on the outside of the supporting fence and within easy access of the collector passing through the alley it is only necessary for said collector to place his bucket beneath the lower end of the chute and remove the cap 11 at which time the garbage will readily slide from the chute as will be obvious.
Of course I do not wish to be limited to the exact details of construction as herein shown as these may be varied within the limits of the appended claim without departing from the spirit of my invention.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new and useful is A garbage receptacle comprising in combination with a substantially vertical support having a hole therethrough, a container permanently fixed. to the support in a vertical position above the hole, said container having an inverted i'rusto-conical bottom, a chute of smaller diameter than the container arranged on an incline and leading from the frusto-conical bottom of the container to the opposite side of the support on which said container is mounted by projecting through the hole in said support, and means for nor-. mally closing the lower end or" the chute. 10
In testimony whereof, I have hereunto affixed my signature.
I ARTHUR HAGAN.
