,2r Claims. I, `(C1. i2-13) The present invention relates to new vand improved receptacles for garbage cans.

An important object of the invention resides in the provision of a receptacle of the type aboveidentified that is formed of concrete or similar material, the major portion of which is submerged in the ground providing a maximum of cleanliness in the disposition of garbage.

A further object of the invention is to provide a receptacle for the garbage can which will fully protect the same from the weather thereby improving its efficiency from a sanitary standpoint. The garbage can is removably disposed within the embedded receptacle and covered by means of a closure member forming a part of the receptacle permitting periodic emptying of the garbage can and at the same time maintaining the same in a concealed manner.

The invention will be fully and comprehensively understood from a consideration of the following detailed description when read in con' nection with the accompanying drawing forms a part of the application.

In the embodiment of the invention as disclosed in the drawing, there is provided a receptacle formed of concrete or similar material embedded ,within the ground and adapted to receive a garbage can. The receptacle is provided with a cover hinged thereto and adapted to be foot operated for raising the same whereby the garbage can be readily positioned and removed from the receptacle.

Referring to the drawing for a more detailed description thereof, the receptacle generally designated by the reference numeral 5 has its which major portion placed beneath the ground as` garbage can to be contained within the receptacle.

The upper end portion of the receptacle extends abovethe vground,which end is reduced and has an upwardly and inwardly inclined outer surface 8 forming a, shoulder 9 upon which the hinged cover I0 rests. The reduced upper end of the cylinder is reinforced by one or a plurality'of steelv'wires II embedded therein, the same being reinforced to alleviate the possibility of damage thereto upon frequent opening and closing of the cover I0.

The cover Il! is preferably formed of a relatively heavy gauge metal, said cover completely enclosing the upper reduced end of the receptacle and resting upon the shoulder 9, as more clearly shown in Figure 2 of the drawing. A hinge generally designated at I2 is provided for securing the cover to the receptacle, said hinge comprising the member I3 secured by means I4 .'to the cover and a second member I5 bolted or otherwise secured as indicated at I6 to the outer surface of the wall 6. The members I3 and I5 are united by means of a pin I'I whereby the member I3 is adapted to swing on the member I5. The member I3 secured to the cover I0 is provided with an angular foot piece I8 through the medium of which the cover may be conveniently raised and said hinge member is also provided can disposed within the receptacle and the cover ymember Il] in closed position, said can will be of the receptacle 5 wherebysaid receptacle may be disposed thereon in the manner shown in completely protected from the weather as well as preventing the escape of foul odors therefrom and otherwise improving the sanitary efficiency of the receptacle.

Also it will be understood, of course, by those skilled inthe art that variations in the hereinabove described device involving the substitution of substantial equivalents for the devices described are intended to be comprehended within the spirit of the present invention and that the invention is capable of extended application and is not confined to the exact showing of the draw` ing nor to the precise construction described and, therefore, such changes and modifications may Figure 2. What is claimed is:

1. In a receptacle for garbage cans, a cylindrical container forming body fitted within a cavity in the ground so that its bottom open end is disposed on the bottom of the cavity and having a fractional portion of its length projecting above the ground to provide a protruding upper portion, the top end of the container being externally reduced to form a horizontal relatively narrow shoulder merging into a frusto-conical section having a reduced taper toward the top edge, and a round cover section hingedly connected with the protruding upperportion of the container, the said cover section formed of sheet metal having its marginal portion shaped to form a frusto-conical rim adapted to t snugly on the frusto-conical portion of the container top and having a laterally projecting flange adapted to t snugly upon the shoulder of the container. In a receptacle for garbage cans and the like, a cylindrical container having its major portion tted Within a cavity in the ground With its bottom end portion tightly fitted over the upper portion of a circular block of solid material disposed in the bottom of the cavity, the said container having the minor portion of its length projecting above the ground to form a protruding upper part, the top portion of the said container being reduced externally and shaped to form a horizontal shoulder substantially above the ground and a frusto-conical neck portion having a reduced taper from the shoulder to the top edge of the container, an annular reinforcing member embedded in the top reduced portion of the container, a cover tted to close the raised top end of the container, an annular marginal portion formed on the cover having a frustoconical section adapted to iit snugly upon the frusto-oonical neck portion of the container and having an outwardly directed flange formed at its periphery adapted to seat tightly on the shoulder of the container, and a hinge for pivotally connecting the cover with the protruding upper part of the container.
