W. J. ELLIOTT WATER HEATER FOR STOYES Filed Feb. 10. 1922 M jam/0M4 \ll jlwfizuww Patented Jan. 22, 19241..

WILLIAM J. ELLIOTT, E BROOKLYN, NEW YORK.
WATER HEATER. FOR- STOVES.
' Application filed February T0 aZZ whom it may concern Be it known that I, IVILLIAM J. ELLIOTT, a citizen of the UnitedStates residing at Brooklyn, in the county of Kings and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in lVater Heaters for Stoves, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawing.
This invention relates to a certain new and useful improvement in water heaters especially adapted to be used in connection with vapor, gas and electric stoves and is an improvement on my patent granted to me June 3, 1919, Number 1,305,643? and the construction of water heater disclosed in an application filed by use October 21, 1921, Serial Number 509,385, the object being to improve the heating efficiency of the water back by causing the water to pass transversely across the top and then back around the burners.
Another and further object of the invention is to provide a water back which is formed of a single piece of pipe having a substantially circular or oval portion at one end and intermediate circular or oval portions, the end portions being brought back in the same horizontal plane with the circular or oval portion and terminating in inlets and outlets which canbe'readily connected to the inlet and outlet pipes'of an ordinary water boiler.
Another object of my invention is to provide a water heater which can be formed with one or more circular or oval portions so that the water back can be constructed to be used in connection with a gas stove having any number of burners.
Another object of the invention is to provide a construction of water back which can be readily secured to the under side of a stove top constructed in accordance with my patent above referred to.
Other and further objects and advantages of the invention will be hereinafter set forth and the novel features thereof defined by the appended claim.
In the drawings,
Figure 1 is a plan view partly in section showing the application of my improved construction of water back;'
Figure 2 is a section taken on line 22 of Figure 1; and
Figure 3 is a plan view partly in sec- 10, 1922. Serial No. 535,576.
tion showinga plurality of circular or oval portions to form a water back for a gas stove having more than two burners.
In the drawings I have shown the application of my improved construction of water back to a gas range 1 provided with burners 2 disposed under the stove top in the usual manner. In using my improved construction of water back as shown, I place the back above these burners and secure the same to a stove top 3 constructed substantially as shown in my patent which, comprises a rectangular shaped body having marginal flanges provided with cut-away portions so that the waste heat units are utilized for heating the water and heating the auxiliary top.
The construction of water back disclosed in Figure 1 is formed of a pipe bent intermediate its ends to form one or more circu lar or oval portions 4, the ends being brought back in the same horizontal plane with a circular portion and substantially parallel therewith so as to conform to the shape thereof the ends extending through suitable openings formed in one of the marginal flanges of the auxiliary top 3.
By constructing the water heater in this manner, the water in circulating through the coils thus formed passes from one side edge of the auxiliary topto approximately the other side edge of the top and then around the burners and out the ends thereof which are threaded to form connecting ends 6 forming inlets and outlets which are adapted to be connected in the usual manner to the boiler.
In my application above referred to the inlet and outlet were in a line with the coils thus formed while in my improved construction disclosed in this application the inlet and outlet extend from one side of the top to the opposite side thereof and the coils are formed intermediate the inlet and outlet whereby I am able to increase the heating effect of the coils.
In the form shown in Figure 3 I show a construction of water back especially adapted to be used in connection with a four burner stove and the inlet and outlets S and 9 have formed between their ends circular or oval portions 10, all of which are arranged in the same horizontal plane so that they can be readily attached to the under side of the auxiliary top and by this construction the water enters one edge of the auxiliary top, passes to the other edge, then back to the original edge in a zigzag manner so as to increase the heating elfect of the water back or coil.
lVhile I have shown the coil formed to be used in connection with a two or tour burner stove, it is, of course, understood that the circular or oval portions can be of any number desired and I do not wish to limit myself to the "forming of the back with any specified number of circular or oval portions as I am aware that the number will be determined by the number of burners on the stove to which the device is to be attached.
From the foregoing description it will i be seen that I have provided. a water heater formed of a pipe which at its ends. forms an inlet and outlet and intermediate its ends co1ls lying 1n the same horizontal plane adapted to be arranged above the burners of the stove.
What I claim is rThe combination with a gas or vapor stove, of an auxiliary top having a marginal substantially vertically disposed flange adapted to rest on said stove to hold said top spaced therefrom, of a water .coil arranged under said top ant. supported thereby formed of a single piece of pipe having its ends extended through one flange of said top, the intermediate portions, of said pipe being bent to form one or more substantially circular portions arranged in the same horizontal plane with the other portion of said pipe and adapted to be disposed over the burners of said gas or vapor stove.
In testimony whereof I hereunto affix my signature.-
WILLIAM J ELLIOTT.
