Specification of Letters Patent.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, WALTER ALPRATT, a citizen of the United States of America, and resident of Grafton, State of West Virginia, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Water- I-Ieaters, of which the following is a specification.

My invention relates to new and useful improvements in water heaters, and more particularly to that class of water heaters adapted for household use; and it consists in the particular construction, arrangement and combination of parts which will hereinafter be fully described.

The object of the invention is to provide a water heater for household use by means of which water may be readily heated to a high temperature in a comparatively short time after lighting. 7

A further object is to provide a water heater which is extremely simple in its construction, containing no complicated or special partsthat is, no parts which may not be readily supplied by an ordinary plumber and, consequently, a heater which may be readily repaired when out of order by any ordinary plumber. And a still further object is to provide a water heater which is comparatively inexpensive to manufacture.

In describin the invention in detail, reference is herein had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, in which- Figure l is a front elevation of my invention complete; Fig. 2 is a similar view of the invention with the cover removed; Fig. 3 is an end view of the same; and Fig. 4 is a top plan view of the same.

Referring to said drawings, in which like reference numerals designate like parts throughout the several views, 1 indicates a water-supply pipe leading from the heating coil 2 of my heater, said coil being composed of a plurality of longitudinal parallel pipe-sections 3 arranged in pairs 4 and connected at their ends by means of elbows 5 and short pipe-sections 6, the latter having oppositely-threaded ends. As is apparent,

any number of pairs 4 of-parallel pipe-sections 3 may be employed in forming the coil, and sa1d pairs may be arranged on the same horlzontal plane, or in tlers, one over ancouity of Taylor, and

other; or, where four or more pairs are employed, as shown in the drawings, two or more pairs may be located in the same plane and two or more tiers employed.

Located directly beneath each pair 4: of the pipesections composing the heating coil, or, when they are arranged in tiers, between pairs of tiers, is a longitudinal gasburner 7 having slits or perforations therein. Connected with said burners is a gassupply pipe 8 having a suitable valve 9. Said burners are located with relation to the heating coil in the manner above described in order to effect the economical and ready heating of the water passing through said coil. A pilot pipe 10 with a valve 11 is connected with-the gas-supply pipe 8 at a suitable point in the rear of the valve 9, said pilot being directed to a suitable point over a burner 7. The valve 11 is adapted to be set to allow a small amount of gas to continuously issue through said pilot, which, remaining lighted, serves to light the gas when turned into said burners. A pipe 12 connects the heating coil 2 with the ordinary boiler 13. Mounted upon a base 145 are supports 15 having lugs for engaging and supporting said coil, as shown. Said base 14 is adapted for mounting upon suitable wallbrackets 16, as shown. A removable cover 17 of sheet metal is provided for fitting over and inclosing said coil and burners, as shown, a suitable draft opening, or pipe 18, being provided in its top, as shown.

Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-

In a water heater, a base, supports 15 mounted upon said base, a heating coil, lugs carried by said supports in supporting engagement with said coil, said coil comprising a plurality of parallel pipe-sections arranged in pairs and in a plurality of tiers, each tier comprising a plurality of pairs, gas burners heated between pairs of tiers, and a removable cover inclosing said coil and burners.
