2 SHEETS-SHEEF 2.
WILLIAM J. ELLIOTT, OF BROOKLYN, NEW YORK.
COMBINATION STOVE-TOP AND WATER-HEATER FOR GAS AND VAPOR $TOVES.
Application filed may 2'5. 1918.
T 0 all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, WILLIAM J. ELLIOTT, a citizenof the United States, residing at Brooklyn, in the county of Kings and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Combination Stove- Tops and VVater-Heaters for Gas and Vapor Stoves, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawing.
This invention relates to certain new and useful improvements in a combination stove .top and water heater for gas and vapor stoves; the object being to provide a top and water heater which can be readily placed in position on an ordinary gas range or stove whereby the heat units from the burners thereof can be utilized to heat water.
. Another and further object of the invention is to provide a top and water heater which is so constructed that when placed in position upon a gas range an auxiliary top is formed which will be heated by the waste heat units from the burners of the range in order to allow food to be kept warm thereon when only one burner is in operation.
Another object of my invention is to provide a device which is exceedingly simple and cheap in construction and one in which the water chambers are so formed that the water therein will be thoroughly heated without affecting the heating capacity of the burner for cooking purposes.
Other and further objects and advantages of the invention will be hereinafter set forth and the novel features thereof defined by the appended claims.
In the drawings:
Figure 1 is a perspective view of my 1mproved construction of, top and water heater showing the application of same to a gas range;
Fig. 2 is an inverted plan view of the top removed showing the water chambers partly in section;
Fig. 3 is a section taken on line 3-3 of Fig. 1; and
Fig. 4 is a detail plan view of a slightly modified form of water chamber.
Like numerals of reference refer to like parts in the several figures of thedrawings. In the drawing I have shown the appl1- cation of my im roved construction of stove topand water cater to a gas range 1 of Specification of Letters Patent.

Serial No. 236542.
the ordinary construction now in use. The
gas range herein shown is provided with four burners 2 which are circular in shape arranged under the usual form of top 3 em-- ployed in this particular kind of range; the above description being given so that the application of my improved stove top and water heater can be clearly understood.
,My improved construction of stove top comprises a rectangular body 4 having a marginal depending flange 5 which is cut away at 6 to form corner legs 7 in order to allow air to circulate under the top as will be hereinafter fully described. The top 4 is provided 'with lid openings 8 adapted to receive lids 9 which are sumiorted by lugs 9, and in the drawing I haveshown two of the lid openings provided with lids and the other two openings without lids so that the cooking vessel can be placed in position Within the openings and supported by the lugs.
I have found in practice that by providing a top, as herein shown and described, with two water chambers, the water in an ordinary boiler can be heated, but it is clearly understood that I do not wish to limit myself to the use of any particular number of water heaters.
Arranged under two of the lid openings are circular water chambers 10 having partitions 11, said water chambers being sub stantially V-shaped in cross-section in order to provide inclined faces, the end faces being adapted to deflect the heat units centrally from the burners in order to allow a cooking uessel to be used in the ordinary manner. The lid supporting lugs are so formed that they extend downwardly and are adapted to be engaged by the upper faces of the water chambers whereby a circular air inlet will be formed in order to prevent soot from formin on the cooking vessel, and to allow the burner to obtain the proper air so that the proper combustion will be obtained.
The water chambers are provided with apertured lugs 12 through which bolts 13 are adapted to pass for securing the water 14 of one water chamber connected to theburners, as clearly shown in Fig.
\Vhen the top and the water chambers carried thereby are in position upon a gas stove, the water chambers are adapted to drop into the lid openings of the gas range and be supported by the top just above the Ev forming the water chambers with several bosses, the same can be connected to the boiler when arranged on either side of the stove.
In the modification shown in Fig. 4, the water chambers 21 are reduced in thickness as shown at :22 to allow the same to be properly positioned on stoves having tops of different shapes, and while I have shown in the several figures of the drawing a particu lar design of top and water chamber, I do not wish to limit myself to any exact construction, as the main object of my invention is to provide an auxiliary top for a .stove having a water chamber carried thereby in such a manner that when the auxiliary top is in position upon a gas stove or range, the burners thereof, while being used for cooking purposes, will heat the water within the water chambers thereby utilizing all of the heat units of the burners.
I claim:
1. The combination of a gas or vapor stove, an auxiliary top comprising a rectangularshaped body having a marginal flange provided with cut-away portions to provide air inlets, said body being provided with lid openings, circular water heaters arranged below said lid openings and spaced therefrom, to provide annular spaces, said water heaters being provided with inlet and outlet openings, separated by a partition for causing the water to circulate around each of the chambers of said heaters.
2. The combination with a gas or vapor stove having a top provided with burners arranged beneath the same, of an auxiliary top mounted thereon having a marginal depending flange provided with air-inlets, said auxiliary top being provided'with lid openings, said lid openings being provided with depending lid supporting lugs, circular water heaters surrounding said lid openings in engagement with said lugs, said water heaters being spaced by said lugs to form annular air inlets, said water heaters being substantially V-shaped in cross-section and provided with inlet and outlet openings at right angles to each other for causing the water to circulate substantially around each heater.
In testimony whereof I hereunto aflix my signature in the presence of two witnesses.
WILLIAM J. ELLIOTT.
