FURNACE.
Application led December 14, 1927. Serial No. 239,865.
This invention relates to furnaces, and has for an object the provision of a furnaceof the warm air circulating type wherein the combustion part of the furnace comprises an enclosure having a top wall thereon, a grate for supporting the fuel and spaced from' the lower end of said enclosure, leaving a communication for the passage of the products of combustion from said enclosure above the grat-e, and means for conning and conducting the products of combustion to the outside.
Another object of the invention is to provide a furnace of the down draft type comprising an enclosure having a .combustion chamber therein open at its lower end for the passage ofthe products of combustion above the grate into said enclosure and thence to the outside.
Other objects will appear from the following description7 reference being made to the drawing in which Fig. 1 is a vertical sectional view of a furnace constructed in accordance with my invention, the usual enclosing` shell or casing being omitted.

rlhe construction shown is designed and adapted to be confined within the usual shell or casing, which is omitted from the drawing because the application of the invention thereto is well understood.
The combustion apparatus comprising the present invention is mounted upon an ashreceptacle 1 from which the ashes may be removed through a passage 2. |The grate 3 is supported upon the ash receptacle-in a novel relationship to the remaining structure so that a down draft is obtained without passing the products of combustion through the grate.
A cylindrical enclosure 4 is mounted upon the upper end of the ash receptacle 1. A ledge 5 is integral with the inner sideof the enclosure 4 below the plane of the fuel passage 6. An element 7 is removably supported upon t-he ledge 5 and is shaped to provide a ring 8 located eccentrically in the en closure 1- and connected by a number of radial arms 9 with portion 10 which is concentric with said enclosure 4. This element is located in the enclosure A in the relationship shown in which the arcuate portion 10 is toward the rear of the .furnace so that the structure supported by said element is adjacent tol the fuel passage 6.
A cylindrical fuel confining lire pot 11 is provided on its upper end with a circum-Y ferential flange 12. This lire pot 11 extends downwardly through the ring 8 and is supported by the flange 12 seating upon said ring. The relationship is such that the lower end of the fire pot 11 is some distance above the grate 3 so that the fuel may spread around upon the grat-e 3 and fill the lower portion of the tire pot, leaving a passage for the products of combustion between the grate and the lower end of the fire pot.
An enclosure is provided above the4 tire pot, the same comprising a wall 13 which is arcuate in end elevation and in cross section (F ig. 2) having its edges abutting against the inner surface of the enclosure A at opposite sides of the fuel passage 6. This arcuate wall 13 is seated upon the ring 8 around the adjacent portions of the flange 12. A wall 14e closes the upper end of the compartment of which -the wall 13 forms a part.
An upper end wall 15 is mounted upon the `upper end of the enclosure 4 and has an annular flange 16 around the outlet 17. The flange 16 supports a drum 18, the same having a flange 19 around an inlet opening 20, which flange is joined with the flange 16. A baille wall 21 is provided in the drum 18 causing` the products of combustion to circulate as designated by the arrows as such product-s pass to the outlet 22.
From the foregoing it will be seen that the device is a furnace of the down draft type in which the grate is preserved from destruction because it is protected by the fuel supported thereby so that the heated products of combustion pass above the grate and below the lower end ofthe fire pot into the space formed between the wall of the enclosure t and the wall of the fire pot structure. The products of combustion follow the course indicated by the arrows in Fig. 1, thus obtaining sufficient heat transfer with resulting economy.

2. A furnace comprising an enclosure having a lateral fuel inlet passage and having an outlet passage through its upper end, a ringv removably supported eccentrically within said enclosure below said fuel inlet passage7 a lire pot extending through and supported by said ring, a separate arcuate wall supported upon said ring around the upper end of said fire pot and having its ends abutting against the wall of said enclosure laterally from said fuel inlet passage, and a wall seated upon the upper end of said arcu te wall below said outlet passage andclosing the upper end of the space formed by said arcuate wall and the Wall of said enclosure.
