A. SPAU LDIN G.
Gun-Locks. N0,t48,t50 PatentedMarch3.1874.

UNITED STATES PATENT Cretan,
ABEL SPAULDING, OF SWANTON, OHIO, ASSIGNOR TO HIMSELF AND BENONI T. GEER, OF SAME PLACE.
IMPROVEMENT lN GUN-LOCKS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent N0.14,l50, dated March 3, 1874; application filed January 17, 1874;
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ABEL SPAULDING, of Swanton, in the county of Fulton and State of Ohio, have invented a new and Improved Gun-Lock, of which the following is a specification:
The accompanying drawing represents a front view of my improved gun-lock, showing the construction of the same.
The object of my invention is to construct an improved gun-lock, which is of greater strength and durability than those in common use, the parts being also more evenly balanced, of increased elasticity, and quicker movement. My invention consists in provid ing in place of the feather-spring in' use, a second mainspring in the rear part of the lock, which is connected with the tumbler and sear, and operates them jointly with greater precision and with less strain upon the latter.
In the drawing, A represents a gun-lock of the usual construction, composed of the hammer B, mainspring G, and sear D, and tumbler B. The mainspring O is jointed, by a short pivoted link, a, to an arm of tumbler B, a second link, b, being pivoted to the rear part of the same, and jointed to the end of a second additional mainspring, E, which is attached to the rear end of look A, as shown in the drawing. This second spring E is placed in opposite position to the front mainspring (J, and acts with its other end on the sear D. By cooking the hammer the tumbler B exercises an equal strain on the jointed ends of both springs E and O, and balances their power evenly, while giving at the same time the required spring pressure on the sear. The joint action of both mainsprings makes the front spring less liable to break, and imparts greater power to the hammer. The lock becomes thereby more durable and serviceable; also quicker and more flexible in its movements.
Hay'ing thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent In combination with the hammer B, mainspring 0, sear D, and tumbler B, comprising an ordinary look mechanism, an additional mainspring which is jointed to the rear part of the tumbler and trigger in opposite direction to the front mainspring, so as to act joint- 1y with the same on the tumbler, substantially as specified.
