Description

J. A. LOWE.
Lock for Fire-Arms.
Patented Feb. 8, 1859.
JAMES A. LOWE, OF NEW YORK, N. Y.
PATENT OFFICE.
IMPROVEMENT IN GUN-LOCKS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 22,881, dated February 8, 1859.
T 0 aZZ whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, J AMEs A. LOWE, of the city and county and State of New York, have invented an Improvement in the Locks of Self- Cocking Fire-Arms, of which the following drawings and specifications I declare to be correct.
By constructing. the locks of self cocking fire-arms in the following manner three desirable objects are accomplished: first, that when it is cocked it fully releases the finger from all pressure of mainspring; secondly, the lock being without a sear does not require any steel or case-hardened parts; thirdly, the parts are so simple it can be easily and cheaply made.
In the annexed drawings, Figure 1 is a side view of the lock with the inner plate removed, in which A is the cock; 0, the trigger; L, the connecting-link; O and H, feather-springs; J, the trip. Fig. 2 is an edge view of the connecting'link L.
The look A is connected to the trigger O by the link L, which has the rule-joint E at or near the middle, the pivot of which j oint, passing slightly beyond the line drawn through the pivot-s of connection on cock and trigger, forms a set-joint which enables the link L to act as one piece until the cock is raised, so the pivots on each end of the link or on a line with the pivot on which the trigger moves, which now receives all pressure of the mainspring, and the joint E now being stopped in its upward motion by the trip J, while the end of link connected to the trigger passes on,which unsets the said joint, and the cock is thrown forward by the mainspring to discharge the piece, and as the feather-spring H carries the trigger to its place, the spring 0, by pressing against the joint, resets it for another discharge.
What I claim as my invention, and desire to secure, isa,
The rule-joint or its equivalent in the link, substantially as desoribed, and for the purpose herein set forth.
JAMES A. LOWE.
