IMPROVEMENT IN FARM=GATES.
Specification forming part of Letters Paent No. 147,952, dated February 24, 1874; application filed January 9, 1874.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, WILLIAM LUNDY, of Atalissa, in the county of Muscatine and State of Iowa, have invented a new andIinproved Gate Opening and Closing Apparatus; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawing forming a part of this specification.
The invention relates to the combination of a cranked rod with the gate and devices to open and close it, the gate-latch being raised to disengage it from the catch on one post by turning the cranked rod on its axis, and from y the catch on the other post, which holds the 'gate open, by pulling the rod over out of a perpendicular position, as hereinafter described.
The drawing is a perspective view of a gate, and apparatus for opening and closing it, all arranged according to my invention.
A is the gate; B, the latch; D, a wire connecting the latch to the free end of a horizontal arm, E, of a vertical cranked rod mounted near about the middle of the gate. This rod passes through an elongated slot, 2', in a keeper, m, attached to the upper rail of the gate, and is stepped in a block, 0, at its lower end. The arm 1*) is connected by a wire, G, with the end II of lever I pivoted horizontally near its middle on a post, J, on the front side of the gate. Said arm is also connected by a wire, K, with the handle end of a lever, L, which is hinged and mounted, similarly to I, on a post, hill, on the rear side of the gate. The end N of this lever, corresponding to end H of lever I, is connected to the handle end of said lever by the long wire 0,-crossing wire G, so that a movement of one lever will cause a movement of the other in the reverse of the direction in which the one is moved. If lever I is moved toward the gate its first effect, besides setting lever L in motion, is to swing cranked rod F and raise the latch to unfasten the gate, and then it will swing the gate open, at the same time swinging the handle end of lever L toward the gate; then, if, after passin g through the gate, the rider pushes lever L back again, he will swing the gate shut and swing lever I back to the position represented in the drawing. If, going the other way, the rider comes to lever L, and pushes it, he will cause the rod F to incline toward the pivotpost It, which movement is permitted by the elongated slot 1., and thus produce the same effect by pulling lever I and wire 0, and then, after passing through the gate, if he pushes lever I forward he will close the gate, as before. Thus the latch 13 is -aised from the catch of post S by turning the rod F on its axis but it is raised from the catch of post T by drawing the rod back in the slot i toward the hinge of the gate. In either case the gate is swung, after being unlatohed, by continuing the traction on the rod F through the me dium of the rods and levers. The handles being hinged to the levers I I, they canv be elevated or lowered to suit the convenience of the operator, or to avoid contact with loads of hay, 850.
By the arrangement of levers and wires, as above described, when the long arm of one of the levers is pushed toward the gate the latter is opened. This movement will always throw the corresponding arm of the other lever also toward the gate, so thatit will be thus in proper position to be seized. by the person passing through the gateway; whereas, if the levers moved in the same direction, it would be much more difficult to seize and operate them from a carriage, or on horseback; and, in any event, the carriage or horse would have to be stopped.
I do not claim pivoted hand-levers, connected with a gate, to raise the latch and swing the same; but
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
The combination, with the gate A, having pivoted latch B, and the posts S T, provided with catches, as described, of the cranked vibrating rod E F, the slotted keeper m, and cords or wires D G K O, and levers I and L, as shown and described, to operate as specified.
