WILLIAM J. MOORE, on THE DALLES, onneoN.
OPENING OR CLOSING GATES.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 608,702, dated August 9, 1898. Application filed November '7, 1896. Serial No. 611,434. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, WILLIAM J. MOORE, a citizen of the United States, residing at The Dalles, Vasco county, Oregon, have invented and produced a new and original Device for Opening or Closing Gates, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawing, showing a part thereof.
The invention relates to gate opening and closing mechanism and it consists in the construction and novel combination of parts hereinafter described and claimed.
The figure in the drawing is a view in perspective of a gate provided with the improved opening and closing mechanism of lnyinvention.
The hinge-post of the gate, the latch-post for the gate, and the auxiliary posts located on opposite sides of the hinge-post are of ordinary construction. In this instance the gate is an ordinary swinging gate composed of horizontal parallel bars, end bars or uprights connecting the horizontal parallel bars, and a diagonal brace-bar extending from the upper end of the front vertical bar of the swinging portion of the gate to the lower end of the rear vertical bar of the said swinging portion of the gate. The auxiliary posts 1 2 are provided one with arms g h and the other with an arm 2'. Each of these three arms 9 7L 2' is provided at its free end with a pulley for guiding the ropes 3 4., by which the gate may be opened and closed when said ropes are properly manipulated. fis the pivoted latch of the gate. Z is a rope, cord, or wire which passes through the loop 6, which is connected to the rear batten of the gate by wires or rods a c and to the upper rail or bar of the gate by a wire or rod Z). The auxiliary post 1 is provided with a catch or keeper h to hold the gate in the open position after it has been swung open until such time as it shall have been designedly closed.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new and useful, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
The combination with the hinge-post, latchpost and auxiliary posts on oppositesides of the hinge-post, said auxiliary posts having pulleys g h 2' at their outer ends, of the swing ing gate connected by hinges to the hingepost and provided with a lift-latch at its forward end adapted to engage a keeper on the latch-post, an open ring connected by brace rods or wires to the rear vertical bar of the gate and to the top rail or bar of said gate, .a latch-rod connected at its front end to the lift-latch passed back through the supporting-loop and connected with an eye with which the opening and closing wires are connected to lift the gate-latch and swing the gate to the opened and closed positions, substantially as specified.
