Description
'5. G. SHERMAN: l
(111112115.4 110.184,181. Patented Nv.7, 18761.
j'rATns PATENT Frou;
l JEREMIAH G. SHERMAN, OF MCHENRY, ILLINOIS.
IMPROVEMENT IN GATES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 184,181, dated November 7, 1876; application filed September 9, 1876.
`lowing is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, making a part of this speciicatiou.
The nature of my invention consists in the construction and arrangement of a gate,as will be hereinafter more fully set forth.
In order to enable others skilled in the art to which my invention appertai-ns to make and use the same, I will now proceed to describe its construction and operation, referring to the annexed drawing, which represent-s a perspective view of my improved gate.
A represents the gate proper, the inner end ot' which is placed between two posts, B B, set at an angle with the line of the gate when closed, and the gate rests upon a pivot, a, projecting from a cross-bar, Bl, connecting the lower ends ot' the posts. The upper ends of said posts are also connected by a crossbar, B2, on which is a pin or screw, b. From this pin or screw extend two wires, d d, diagonally downward to the lower front or outer corner of the gate, where said wires are attached to 4 the lower end of a pivoted latch, O. This latch extends upward along the outer end of the gate, 4and is, by a wire, e, connected with a screw, f, on top ot' the gate, near the inner end.
The wires d d support the outer end of the gate, and are adjusted by means of a sliding loop, h, surrounding them above the top of the gate. v
It -will be noticed that the wires d dare attached to the lower end of the latch; hence the weight of the latch has a tendency to, and
does, throw the upper end of the latch outward, to latch the gate -either opened or closed.
' D is the post against which the gate latches when open. On the top of this post is pivoted a swing or swinging arm, E, which extends backward from the post, and has at its outer end a rod, G, pivoted to it. The otherend of this rod is connected to the latch-wire c on top of the gate, as shown. The swing E is, by a rod, H, connected with a lever, I, pivoted on top ot a post, J. From the swing E extends another rod, K, in the opposite direction, which rod connects with a lever, L, pivoted at its lower end to the post B, and has an arm, M, pendent fromits upper end.
lo operate the gate, either the lever I or pendant M is used, and in operation the swing E is turned on its pivot, and, by means ot' the rod G, draws the latch C back, `to unlatch the gate, and the gate at once swings on its pivot. As soon asthe gate has turned its full distance, and the force on the'lever is removed, the weight of the gate, through the Wires d, latches the gate.
0n the top ofthe gate, hackof the drivingrod G, is a stop, i, which is to prevent the driving-rod from pulling the latch back when the gate is to be latched open or shut, but leaves it free to unlatch from either post.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is r l. The combination of the gate A, supported at its inner end on the pivot a, the diagonal suspension-wires d d, and the pivoted latch C, having the wires d attached to its lower end, whereby the weight of the gate is caused to latch it, substantially as set forth.
2. The swing E and rod G, in combination with the wire e, latch C, and gate A, substantially as and for the purposes herein set forth.
3. The combination, with the gate A, latch C, and wire e, of the rod Gr, swing E, rods H K, and levers I L, as and for the purposes set forth.
4. The stop i', in combination with the gate A and driving-rod G, for the purposes herein set forth.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing I have hereunto set my hand this 17th day of August, '1876.
JEREMIAH G. SHERMAN Witnessesz- JAMES A. SoovrLLE, SAMUEL S. SHERMAN.
