' SAFETY COLLABAND, corn BUTTON.
a neatiqli filedliily a, 1922. Serial No. 572,644.
To all whom z'zflmay concernfi Be it'known that 1, MA GoNIoK, a citizen ofthe United States, and a resident of-New York, borough of-Bronx, in the county of Bronx and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful 'Impr'ovements in a Safety Collar and Cuff Button, of which the following is'a full,
clear, and exact specification.
nectible parts of a garmentworn' by a per son, isuch as applying a collar to-the neckband' of a shirt or waist or'connecting the cuffs of the'garment whereby the parts ofthe cuff may be separated or'the'collar unattached without danger of accidental loss of the button. The invention contemplates mainly the provisionof a base member and a head member formed on the ends of a shank' or post having two-oppositely pro trading-bosses on annular; flanges with sockets-in theircenters- In'the free edges of the bosses are spaced notche'sj to provide spaced stop members or'teeth. In"
the sockets of thebosses are pivotally seated the ends of an approximately U-shaped spring clamp which is normally disposedin movable straddle position over the head of the'post to allow passage of the clamp and head of the button through the'button hole of a garment and then swung toward the base member for preventing accidental separation of the buttom from the garment. The arms of the U-shaped clamp are spaced for yieldingly engaging the teeth of the bosses of the post when straddling the head and also when swung toward the base member for movably holding the clamp in its adjusted positions.
A further object of the invention is to provide a safety collar and cuff button of a simple and efficient construction which may be made in any appropriate size and shape.
WVith these and other objects in View, the invention will be hereinafter more fully described with reference to the accompany ing drawing forming a part of this specification in which similar characters of reference indicate correspondmg parts in all the views and will then be 'pointed'out in the claims at the end of the description.
In'the drawing, F igure'l'is an elevation of one form of safety collar button embodying my invention. I
Fig. 2 is an elevation of the button showingits clamp swung to a clamping position. Fig. 3 is an elevation of the button with the clamp removed.
Fig. 4 is an elevation of the clamp, and
Fig. 5 is an elevation of the device made in the form of a cufi button.
The device or button when madeof'a form for use'to removably attach especially a collar on the neckband of a shirt, waist or other garment has a post or shank 10 which is preferably straight and may be cylindrical or of other appropriate shape. On one end of the post 10 may be a base member 11 in the'form of a laterally protruding annular flange or plate, such as is commonly used on buttons of this class, and on the other endof the post is a head member 12 which may be in the form of a ball or other shape Projecting in opposite directions from opposite parts of the post 10 in spaced proximity to the base member 11 are two corresponding bosses or annular flanges'13 and 1 1, each having in its center a socket 15. In the free edges of 'the bosses are corresponding spaced stops or teeth, as 16, which are provided by notching, as at 17, 17 and 18, 18, the edge 'of each-boss,
one notch being preferably at each quadrant of'the circumference ofthe boss "so that the pair of notches 17,17 of each boss are in register as well as being disposed crosswise of the post 10, while the pair of notches 18,
18 of each boss are also in register and disl posedon a plane similar to the plane of the post.
In the sockets 15 of the bosses 13 and 14 i are pivotally disposed the lugs, as 19 and 20, protruding toward each other from the arms 21 and 22 of a clamp 23 which is approximately U-shaped to provide a spanning or arch member 2 1 on one of the ends of the arms 21 and 22. The arms 21 and22 may I lugs 19 and 20 may be twoteeth, as 25 and 26, respectively which are spaced from each other for removably fitting in the notches to engage the stops or teeth 16 of the bosses. The clamp 23 is made of spring metal, and the arms 21 and 22 are so spaced that the teeth 25 and 26 are normally seated in the notches of the bosses to prevent accidental movement of the clamp.
When in normal position the clamp is disposed in straddle position'ov'e'rthe head member 12 of the post 1Q of the button with the teeth 25 and 26 being seated in the pairs s of notches 18and' 18 of the bosses 13 and 14.
To use the button forfastening the separated parts of a person s garment, the head member 12 and the clamp i then passed through an opening or button'hole in one 7 end of the garment, and the clamp is swung to a right-angular position relative to the post so that the teeth and 26 of the arms 21 and 22 of the clamp will be yieldingly movedinto the pairs of notches 17 andfl? of the-bosses 13 and 14:. The button will thereby be held toone end part of the garment against liability of being lost, and by passing'the' head member 12 through an opening or button hole in the other end of the garment the ends of the garment will be detachably fastened. \Vhen the device is madefor use as a cufii button, as shown, in Fig. 5 the formations of its parts are similar to those of the collar button, excepting that the shank or post 10 and the clamp 23' are curved or bent in an appropriate manner, and the base memberll as well as the head member 12 may also be made in either plain or ornamental design asoccasion'requires.
In the foregoing description, I'have embodied the preferred form of my invention, but I do not wish to be understood as limiting-myselfthereto, as I am aware that modification's may be made therein without departing from the principle or sacrificing any of theadvantages of this invention, therefore, I reserve to myself the right to make such changes as fairly fall within the scope thereof. 7
-Havi'ng thus described my invention, I
claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent 1. A collar and cuff button, comprising a post having. on its grids a base member and a headmember, sai post haiii ng'i'in spaced proximity to the base member'two oppositely projecting substantially circular bosses, each "having two spaced pairs of notches in its free edge at quadrants thereof,
